Overview


Creates engaging experiences that inspire conservation action. This includes supervising staff, promoting The Wilds, scheduling activities, creating programs/tours, maintaining camp, following safety protocols and all other activities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee The Wilds Conservation Education and Engagement Department.
  • Direct development of age-appropriate spiraling curriculum for all audiences, ages 18 months – adult.
  • Communicate, collaborate, and coordinate CEED-related activities with all other departments
  • Coordinate with VP of the Conservation Education Department to ensure that CEED programs, goals, and projects are in alignment with the overall education strategy for the Family of Parks
  • Recruit, interview, onboard, train, and schedule all Wilds volunteers.
  • Ensure that the curriculum is consistently applied throughout the entire department.
  • Evaluate curriculum and recommend changes as appropriate to the VP of Conservation Education and Engagement.
  • Work with the Philanthropy team to explore, develop, and implement funding for conservation education initiatives.
  • Create and administer CEED operating budget.
  • Proactively lead strategic exploration of new program areas or audiences.
  • Establish diversity, equity, access, and inclusion as a priority in all programs and activities.
  • Coordinate, monitor and evaluate programs and their staff to ensure best practices, safety, quality, and consistency.
  • Maintain necessary permits, records, and statistics on programs and generate reports for VP.
  • Plan, assign, and review work of department staff; act on disciplinary problems, complete performance reviews, recommend salary increases, recommend disciplinary actions when appropriate, and interview candidates for hire.
  • Remain up to date on current education trends.
  • Maintain confidential information related to program participants.
  • Ensure all benchmarks required to maintain grant monies are monitored and met.
  • Manage projects and budgets to achieve program objectives.
  • Partner with Marketing Department to promote programs to expanded market.
  • Constantly strive to further the mission of the organization and avidly support the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.
  • Implement sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required. Master’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Solid understanding of educational theory and practice including free-choice learning, inquiry, and environmental interpretation, required.
  • Minimum of three to five years of successfully leading a team required.
  • Demonstrated ability to write/manage a budget, work with grants, resolve conflict, manage change, problem-solve.
  • Knowledge of education technology, state and national standards, and appropriate grade proficiencies required.
  • Ability to work independently with good organizational skills required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in sometimes stressful situations required.
  • Annual First Aid training and annual CPR training required.
  • Excellent communication skills, including proficiency in writing and public speaking required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays required.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Columbus Zoo Family of Parks team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Possession of a valid Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks’ drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow-up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
