Looking for a leadership positon directly responsible for drowning prevention in a forward thinking and well-resourced large Y Association? The Tampa YMCA may have the leadership role for you as our next Director of Drowning Prevention & Instruction. Reporting to the Executive Director responsible for the Aquatics product line, the Director of Drowning Prevention and Instruction provides coordinating and oversight for Association Safety Around Water (SAW), Mobile Swim, Learn to Swim Week, and Association Aquatic Instructional Programs. Successful candidates will be able to establish and expand our drowning prevention programs throughout our communities with a focus on targeting communities of need. They will have the passion and knowledge to train our lesson instructors to deliver the programs to our high Association Standards.

Under the direction of the Executive Director responsible for the Aquatics Product line, the Association Director of Drowning Prevention and Instruction provides coordinating and oversight for Association Safety Around Water (SAW), Mobile Swim, Learn to Swim Week, and Association Aquatic Instructional Programs. This position works collaboratively with Association Aquatic Directors and Executive Leadership to achieve the Association Swim Lesson and Drowning Prevention Goals to include grant fulfillment requirements.
Critical areas of expertise include: leading others and working in teams, highly organized program management, delivering and managing programs focusing on quality, proven results in growth in programs, successfully overseeing part-time/full-time teams and interviewing, hiring and onboarding associates.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Quality and Growth

  • Drowning Prevention (45%): Provides leadership for Association Drowning Prevention programs that includes Safety Around Water, Mobile Swim, and Learn to Swim Week(s) through Hillsborough and East Pasco Counties
  • Establishes and expands drowning prevention aquatic and safety program activities within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Establishes a Mobile Swim Program targeting communities of need within Association service area and/or grant guidelines
  • Develops expansion plans for all Drowning Prevention Programs and works collaboratively with Financial Development Department and/or key funders to finance expansion efforts.
  • Utilizing network of swim instructions through Family Centers provides oversight to all mobile swim (lesson based) and SAW off site programs.
  • Trains Drowning Prevention lesson instructors to deliver the program to Association Standards
  • Develops best practices, curriculum, and delivery standards to support best in class programming and ensure program success.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships and partnerships with community organizations. Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed to support drowning prevention programs.
  • Reviews and evaluates associate performance **in assigned program areas
  • Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Consumer Funded Swim Lesson (45%) Collaborates with Family Center Aquatic Leadership to ensure that Association swim lesson goals are achieved
  • Coordinates ongoing Association YUSA Swim Lesson Instructor Training programs and ensures on going pipeline of swim lesson instructors to meet swim lesson demand
  • In Collaboration with Director of Quality Improvement ensures Swim Lesson Audit scores of 90% + and Net Promoter Scores 75%+per family center.
  • Develops corrective action plans to support quality and audit standards with family center aquatics leadership.
  • Coordinates in-service training designs as well as on going Instructor Academies.
  • Coordinates with Executive Director onboarding of new Aquatic Directors in areas of Swim Lesson / Instructional Aquatic Programs
  • Collaborates with Marketing Department swim lesson messaging both to enrolled participants as well as external promotion and communication to exceed enrollment targets.
  • Monitors Listen360 Association wide comments and ensures appropriate response to detractors.
  • Manages elevated program participant concerns and investigates as appropriate.

Operations/Team Leadership (10%)

  • Administrative > Manages daily business and administrative functions as it pertains to areas of assigned responsibility.
  • Directly responsible for assigned aquatic budget, supplies, schedules and processing of payroll for direct staff (Instructors/Coaches) to ensure efficient use of resources occurs within programs at all times.
  • Generates and/or analyzes program enrollment as well as distribution of key dashboards.
  • Provides required reports to funders to ensure program reimbursement
  • Ensures adherence to all YMCA policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff.
  • In collaboration with the management team, achieve the center operating margin.
  • Strategic Planning > Develop strategies for short- and long-term needs of assigned programs and effectively leads and manages a stable team toward established goals and objectives. Cultivates program knowledge base for all associates, stressing the importance of program planning, service excellence and community service.
  • Attends best practice sharing meetings with other aquatic leaders across the Y as needed and throughout the industry
  • Joins any required or encouraged professional groups to bring a strong reputation and knowledge base, representing our team as needed in national conferences, training and development opportunities.
  • Participate in annual giving campaign goals and provide leadership to staff giving and engagement.
  • Team Leadership> Provides direct supervision and leadership while hiring, developing, motivating and retaining a committed team passionate about the YMCA’s mission, safety and service to members.
  • Provides direct supervision to all assigned direct reports and develops and monitors staff member development plans and training opportunities that promote career growth within the Y.
  • Advocates for association-wide practices and is a source for innovative ways to grow the program membership experience, base, and practices.
  • Supervises and leads program teams to create and maintain meaningful and impactful relationships.
  • Manages assigned associate schedules and payroll for department ensuring efficient use of resources occurs within programs at all times.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state and county laws and regulations related to payroll, licensing, child labor laws, etc.
  • Attends and actively participates in all trainings, seminars, meetings, conferences as assigned.
  • Participate and/or lead special projects as assigned.
  • Assist and/or lead all areas as assigned by supervisor.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Ensures all Tampa Y program standards and best practices are implemented and followed. Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention.
  • Ensures all program associates are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations. This includes implementing and following training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures.
  • Maintains proper records, including associate certifications, meetings, and trainings.
  • Schedules associates and volunteers in accordance to safety and program needs and ensures all safety and program ratios are followed.
  • Monitors programming to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health & safety regulations.
  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Health Sciences, Physical Education or related field or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of Aquatic Instruction experience required
  • YMCA Lifeguard Instructor Trainer and/or Faculty level certification required OR Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer required
  • Lifeguard Certification (preferred)
  • Experience working in collaborative environment motivating others

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to changing contexts and priorities.

  • Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments

of the community.
Certifications/ Training Required:

  • Must obtain within 30 days of employment and then maintain current certifications in BLS, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration.
  • Maintain other required certifications as assigned by supervisor to include maintain Trainer level certifications in Swim Instruction and Lifeguard Certification as well as other related trainings to provide quality program oversight.
