Summary

The University of Michigan-Flint invites visionary leaders to apply for the Director of University Housing & Dining. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students, the position provides the strategic vision and leadership for the operation of a holistic student housing and dining program at the University of Michigan-Flint. In support of the University's vision, the Director will be expected to mobilize campus resources to create a vibrant and robust residential community; develop channels for external collaboration and growth in conference programs; and support health and wellness through a dynamic and responsive dining program. The Director will be expected to develop a structure and strategy to ensure successful programming and services with measurable outcomes for all constituents.

The Director is responsible for the coordination, supervision and leadership of student housing, conferences and guest services, and dining services. As a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT) the Director will collaborate with other division staff to deliver a comprehensive and developmentally robust living and learning experience for approximately 400 students who are primarily first-year students and other undergraduates. The Director will have the opportunity to provide leadership to demonstrate occupancy growth and change that encompasses collaboration within student affairs, academic affairs, enrollment management and business operations.

Responsibilities*

Business & Management

  • Responsible for the overall administration and management of the Department of Housing & Residential Life including conference/guest housing, meal plans and overall dining services provided through a third-party agreement.

  • Direct short and long-term strategic planning and implementation for a residence life and housing program and its constituent parts addressing the programs, housing model, budget/finances, physical plant and services. Provide detailed occupancy and budget reports.

  • Develop strong relationships with on-campus and off-campus partners to create a robust conference and guest services program that supports existing clients while strategically growing the program.

  • Create and implement policies related to housing and conference/guest management that comply with best practices, university policies and the law.

  • Directly oversee occupancy management and residence hall space utilization of approximately 700 student and conference beds.

  • Directly oversee all external contracts related to department functions.

  • Oversee all auxiliary budgets associated with the department and ensure compliance with federal and state laws and university policies.

Personnel Management

  • Provide direct supervision and mentorship to Associate Director(s) and Office Manager and indirect supervision to all housing staff.

  • Oversee the recruitment, selection, training, and professional development for paraprofessional and professional staff.

Community Development

  • Create a dynamic residential experience for students that promotes an atmosphere of respect for individual differences and community values, and generates enthusiasm in two residence halls.

  • Provide leadership in establishing a residential curriculum based on a curricular approach to residential education.

  • Develop strong relationships with faculty and staff in the development of programming that fosters educational, social, and recreational opportunities that promote learning, inquiry, self-discovery, and personal growth.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of Living/Learning Communities in partnership with key campus stakeholders for the specialized development of residential students.

Administrative

  • Oversee department recruitment, retention and assessment activities.

  • Oversee all department marketing including print media, web page and social media ensuring information is timely, accurate and meets market demands.

  • Serve as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team and various division/campus committees as needed.

  • Establish and maintain customer service expectations and practices among staff.

  • Participate in, and oversee 24 hours on-call first response coverage on a rotating basis.

  • This position is classified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act and a responsible employee under Title IX.

  • Work evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • A master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Business Administration, or related field required.

  • A minimum of seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible work experience in housing administration, conference management or dining services which includes a minimum of three years leading and/or supervising the work of others

Desired Qualifications*

  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to advance the University’s goals in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Previous experience with Adirondack or other third-party residential management software.
  • Previous experience with Public Private Partnerships (housing or dining), Affiliated Housing, and Housing Management Companies.
  • Previous experience with residential learning communities and conference/guest housing
  • Previous experience with renovation, construction, capital planning and managing auxiliary budgets.

Work Schedule

This position requires a fully in-person work schedule at this time and is subject to change based upon the duties of the position and the needs of the department. There is a possibility of hybrid work (some days on campus and some days working remotely) during off-peak times.
