The University of Rochester’s Human Resources Department is seeking a Director of Labor Relations. This role will direct all aspects of Labor Relations, including the negotiation, interpretation, and application of collective bargaining agreements, interpretation, and guidance on policies and performance management. The Director of Labor Relations will oversee processes for review and resolution of employee grievances; advises managers and employees on sensitive labor and bargaining unit employee relations matters; facilitates ongoing communication and working relationships with employee representative organizations, including coordination of joint labor-management committees.

The Director of Labor Relations will achieve this through:

Labor Relations:

  • Negotiates collective bargaining agreements; contract administration and interpretation; and, guidance/coordinator of related management activities.
  • Directs the day-to-day administration of labor contracts. Works with organizational leaders to ensure accurate interpretation and administration of collective bargaining agreements. Oversees actions taken concerning grievances, arbitration, mediation and related labor relations activities in order to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensures adherence to terms of labor contracts by monitoring policies concerning position classification, legal compliance, wage and salary administration, equal employment opportunity, and assessment of staff development needs.

Leadership:

  • Supervises, trains and evaluates a team of HR Representatives in the labor office. Creates work plans in alignment with strategic departmental goals and priorities, organizes and leads staff toward goals and prepares budgets for division, managing the division's performance against plans and budgets; adjusting plans or performance as necessary.
  • Acts in accordance with established University policies and procedures and maintains an awareness of all relevant regulations and requirements at the local, state and federal level.
  • Interacts and collaborates with all HR Centers of Excellence and other administrative offices on the execution of assigned duties and responsibilities. Participates in various teams and committees and provides expertise on assigned activities.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 5 -7 years of relevant experience in Labor Relations, leadership, and negotiating labor contracts required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Strong communication, maintaining relationships, collective bargaining, and arbitration.
