JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Abington is excited to invite applications for a Director of Online and Information Technology (OIT). The College's IT Services operation is a functionally aligned organization that seamlessly integrates Instructional Design, Learning Space/Media, and Computer and Networking services. Reporting to the Chancellor, the Director is a visionary IT leader and educator and a member of the senior leadership team. The Director will be responsible for developing strategy and leading the Information Technology and Online Learning function for Penn State Abington while at the same time, partnering with faculty to enhance their classroom experience and support their vision for student learning and innovation in both pedagogy and technology. This dynamic IT leader will inspire faculty to see the possibilities in using technology to expand their repertoire of teaching tools and provide solutions that enhance teaching, research, learning, and outreach. The Director understands the intricacies and nuances of higher education and has the ability to collaborate, build relationships, and manage programs and expectations across diverse audiences. This position will oversee the team responsible for technology infrastructure for the College, including Multi-platform Servers, Directory Services, Local/Wireless/Wide Area Networking, Security, and SAN/VMware. This unit is also responsible for the management and functionality of 57 technology-enabled classrooms, 15 labs, and a number of other learning spaces as well as the support of approximately 400 staff/faculty computers, over 600 additional on campus computers, five physical servers, and support for 32 virtual servers.

Duties and core competencies include the following:

  • Design, acquisition, management, budget, and implementation of campus-wide computing technologies, classroom/learning space technologies, and related services.

  • Direct the activities necessary to keep technology and services running seamlessly, efficiently, and effectively while ensuring compliance with established standards, policies, and best practices.

  • Evaluate technology infrastructure and create a strategic plan to ensure it meets the long term needs of the College, is congruent with the mission of central ITS and the University and ensures operational excellence.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence through professional development and modeling inclusive behaviors and practices to promote a culture of inclusion and belonging.

  • Define and implement best practices for when things go wrong, including creating disaster recovery/business continuity plans

  • Manage the infrastructure budget and develop budget estimates for projects or acquisitions of technology; ensuring definition, documentation, and understanding of all infrastructure components

  • Develop and supervise a cohesive team that provides excellent support to campus community members.

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher, plus eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s or other advanced degree in related field preferred.

This position requires experience in supporting a broad base of users and systems; in depth knowledge of Virtualization Technologies; practical understanding of how technology can enhance the teaching and learning process; proven track record in successfully managing client concerns; experience with service requests, inventory, and license management tracking systems; demonstrated success working with faculty to produce technological classroom innovations that support student success/positive learning outcomes; demonstrated experience with online pedagogy and learning and evidence of faculty support in this regard.

The successful candidate will encourage and foster the adoption of emerging technologies, have demonstrated experience implementing and managing organizational change, and have a proven ability to meet service level objectives, improve stakeholder/user satisfaction, and implement consistent IT service management best practices. The Director must be able to work in a hands-on environment where flexibility, collaboration, and problem-solving skills are essential, and a good sense of humor is appreciated.

Preferred qualifications and experience include working knowledge of VoIP systems; knowledge of ITIL fundamentals; understanding of progressive education and a proven track record of integrating technology into a progressive classroom setting; prior classroom teaching experience; prior experience with client and end user support and training; previous higher education work experience also preferred.
