The Director of the Honors Program provides institutional leadership in the development and management of an Honors Program that will cultivate excellence among high-achieving undergraduates. This is a full-time position with duties split half-time between teaching (2-3 courses per semester) and administrative responsibilities. This position reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with departments, schools, and divisions in scheduling courses and connecting Honors students with the broader community.
  • Communicates with internal and external communities about Honors Program activities, achievements, and opportunities.
  • Partners with the Admissions Office on the recruitment and admission of students into the Honors Program.
  • Develops marketing materials (brochures, course descriptions).
  • Attends and hosts recruiting sessions and interview with honors students in partnership with the Admissions Office.
  • Organizes and schedules curriculum for Honors Program including priority registration for students in program and working with program faculty to facilitate new Honors course approvals.
  • Ensures the rigor of Honors Program curriculum.
  • Coordinates co-curricular, and extracurricular experiences that will nurture the talents and academic well-being of high-achieving students.
  • Orients Honors faculty including recruiting and mentoring.
  • Provides leadership in orienting and advising Honors students, monitoring their adherence to basic requirements and progress towards graduation, and provides guidance with post- graduate/professional studies.
  • Ensures student learning outcomes for all Honors courses assessed and improved and enhancements documented.
  • Develops and implements plans and reports to assess the effectiveness of the Honors Program.
  • Prepares and manages Honors budget, including monitoring and approving expenditures.
  • Collaborates with the Office of Advancement and Office of Grants on fundraising initiatives and grant applications in support of the Honors Program.
  • Promotes membership and participation in local, regional, and national Honors organizations, including, but not limited to, the National Collegiate Honors Council.
  • Facilitates recognition of all high-achieving students at designated institutional events.
  • Manages development and maintenance of Honors Program web site.
  • Maintains student and alumni database.
  • Teaches 6-9 credit hours per term (per Provost approval), including orientation course for Honors freshman each fall.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Required doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution in a discipline taught at Talladega College.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of teaching undergraduates in a post-secondary institution.
  • Evidence of engaging undergraduate students in innovative and enriching educational experiences.
  • Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse collegiate community.
  • Excellent organizational and management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community and to cultivate an inclusive environment for Honors students.
  • Administrative experience as a program coordinator, director, department chair, or other relevant role.
  • Commitment to excellence, integrity, flexibility, dependability, data-informed decision making, a respectful and cooperative disposition.
