ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:
The Director of Nursing is a Registered Nurse with Administrative and Clinical Leadership responsibility to organize and oversee all nursing operations of the facility. The Director of
Nursing functions at a professional nursing level using both administrative leadership and clinical expertise to create a collaborative and efficient workplace with attention to quality standards and policies.

BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS:

2. Registered Nurse licensed in the state of employment with three to five years experience as a licensed nurse, preferably in long term care.

3. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
4. Must maintain current Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Utilizes expertise in a leadership role as the Clinical Expert for the facility.

· Establishes standards of nursing practice consistent with best practice standards and regulatory guidance.
· Develops and implements clinical programming standards in coordination with medical directors and administration.
· Prepares and maintains accurate Nursing Policy and Procedure manuals.
· Sets objectives and long-term goals for the nursing department.
· Guides staffing procedures.
· Plans and establishes patterns for delivery of care based on resident needs.
· Interviews and hires nursing staff members as needed.
· Makes rounds on a regular basis to observe and monitor care being rendered.
· Ensures nursing care is carried out as directed by practitioner orders, organizational policies and procedures, and State and Federal regulations.
· Evaluates the work performance of all nursing personnel on all shifts.
· Demonstrates, teaches, and evaluates nursing skills utilized in the direct care of the residents.
· Conducts regularly scheduled meetings with staff to monitor resident care and establish goals and protocols and to initiate, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of these processes.

  • Flexes schedule to directly observe and manage staff on all shifts.
  • Identifies educational needs of the staff and supervises planning of programs to meet those needs.
  • Participates in facility provided educational programs.
  • Attends meetings as assigned.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement activities as assigned.
  • Adheres to facility policies & procedures for nursing practice.
  • Understands and complies with State and Federal regulations for care of residents in nursing facilities.

Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individual needs and rights.

  • Collaborates with Residents, Resident Representatives, Physicians and Physician extenders, and the Interdisciplinary team to meet Resident needs and goals.
  • Communicates with Residents and families to discuss Resident care needs and progress made towards goals; and provide encouragement and support to Residents and their families.

Delivers care to residents:

  • Collects complete and ongoing data to determine nursing care needs.
  • Analyzes health status of individuals and families and compares the data with norms when possible in determining nursing care needs.
  • Identifies goals and plans for nursing care.
  • Carries out nursing care actions which promote, maintain, and restore the well-being of individuals.
  • Involves individuals and families in their health promotion, maintenance, and restoration.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the quality of nursing care provided.
  • Administers and evaluates the effect of medications and treatments.
  • Delivers direct resident care following the Resident’s Individualized Care Plan. This includes, but is not limited to: assisting with meals, bathing, personal hygiene, oral hygiene, incontinence care, toileting, positioning, transferring, splint application, etc.
  • Assessing residents as indicated by their status in accordance with facility procedures and standards of nursing practice.
  • Documenting care delivered and assessments according to facility procedures.
  • Ordering supplies, medications, and equipment as per facility policies and procedures.
  • Accepts written and verbal orders for medications and therapeutic treatment from an authorized practitioner in accordance with facility policy.
  • Questions any order that is perceived as unsafe or contraindicated for the resident or which is not clear and shall raise the issue with the ordering practitioner.
  • Transcribes orders to the resident’s medical record per facility policy. o Provides venipuncture: intravenous fluids when:
  • The procedure has been ordered in writing for the resident by an authorized licensed practitioner.
  • The Registered Nurse has had instruction and supervised practiced in administering parenteral fluids or medications into the vein.
  • The intravenous fluid or medication to be administered is the fluid or medication specified in the written order.
  • An accurate record is made concerning the following:
  • The time of the injection
  • The medication or fluid injected
  • The amount of medication or fluid injected
  • Reactions to the fluid
  • Supervises Licensed Vocational Nurses in the provision of venipuncture/intravenous fluid administration.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages and supervises employees in the nursing department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, residents, staff, family members and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess a valid Texas nursing license.
Must maintain continuing education credits per licensure renewal requirements and resident care needs.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Conforms to established work hours and maintains an acceptable work attendance record.
Must be able to function independently.
