The Opportunity:
The Urban Institute has built a cutting-edge in-house Communications team that translates research for broad audiences, leveraging a large portfolio of research and communications products. We seek an editor for Urban’s robust portfolio of health and health care content. The editor will be an essential part of a dynamic and highly productive editorial team and will report to a senior editor within the Editorial Services and Publications team. The editor will also collaborate closely with the researchers and operations staff of Urban’s Health Policy Center.

What You’ll Do:

  • Copyedit health- and health care–related research publications, including policy briefs, reports, and working papers. Roughly half the publications will be about health policy; the remaining half could be about policy on opioid use disorder and treatment, social determinants of health, the social safety net, or related topics.
  • Help manage and prioritize the editorial project queue for the Health Policy Center and related initiatives.
  • Build and manage relationships between Urban’s health economists and data scientists and the Communications team’s digital communications, data visualization, editorial, and writing teams.
  • Format research publications in Word and edit charts in Excel.
  • Uphold Urban style and quality standards in print and digital products.
  • Work with other members of the Communications team to equip researchers with useful digital, presentation, and writing skills.
  • Work with researchers and editorial staff to streamline editorial processes, creating new processes where necessary.
  • Collaborate with researchers and other Communications staff on strategies for new projects.
  • With guidance from the senior editor, assume responsibility for comprehensive editorial strategies or functions.
  • Mentor other editorial and communications staff.

Who You Are:
Essential Skills

  • A keen and careful editorial eye that can spot minor errors and inconsistencies in long, dense publications.
  • The ability to work independently and manage changing day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Understanding of complex research content and the ability to translate such content for nonacademic audiences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A firm grasp of English grammar, usage, and punctuation.
  • The ability to form relationships and communicate effectively with a range of staff.

Technical Skills

  • A bachelor’s degree in English, communications, or a related field or the equivalent experience.
  • 4–5 years of experience in copyediting, proofreading, and/or publications production; previous experience in health policy a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style; familiarity with AMA and Bluebook is also helpful.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, as well as Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience with and a commitment to using inclusive and respectful language.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards for Word files and pdfs.
  • Familiarity with Airtable, Drupal, Github, and R is helpful.
