EO IR Data Analyst Job at Space Dynamics Laboratory

Space Dynamics Laboratory Huntsville, AL

Job ID 11151

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking a junior to mid-career EO IR Data Analyst responsible for creation and analysis of infrared scenes in support of OPIR sensor design concept evaluation. Infrared scenes representative of proposed OPIR concepts are prepared with inserted targets representative of current USSF customer requirements. Scenes are created both using computer models as well as measured on-orbit data. This work supports high fidelity analyses of algorithm and system performance, as well as anchoring of lower fidelity functional performance models. Candidates should have and be willing to discuss experience in four or more of the following areas:

  • Geospatial Imagery data collection, reduction, and analysis using custom software.
  • Image analysis techniques and algorithms using Matlab or equivalent tools.
  • Experience in analyzing EOIR satellite sensor data including validation of the collected data and troubleshooting observed artifacts in the collected imagery.
  • Experience with scene generation models such as SSGM, FLITES, ASSET, DRSIG, or JSIG.
  • Performance models and simulations to predict EOIR system performance.
  • Background clutter suppression algorithms.
  • Development or evaluation of target tracking algorithms for either ballistic or maneuvering targets in cluttered backgrounds.
  • Missile defense domain expertise.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Infrared scene generation using synthetic scene models that predict scenes from space with target insertion
  • Using scenes with embedded targets to evaluate performance of background suppression and target detection algorithms
  • Create/improve software analysis tools using Matlab or equivalent languages
  • Analyzing image products from on-orbit platforms to verify sensor performance and confirm results from experiment test plans
  • Identify key sensor parameter changes that could improve follow-on generations of satellites and sensors to accomplish USAF and USSF objectives
  • Supporting performance evaluation of systems hosted on constellations of satellites
  • Working with cross-disciplinary teams on multiple complex space projects
  • Providing written products documenting analysis, test plans, and performance results

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in image science, physics, applied physics, or optical science + 2 years experience in a field that includes the use of geospatial tools for scientific analysis
  • Experience with image processing including common techniques for background suppression and target detection
  • Knowledge of radiometry, calibration, and estimating EOIR sensor system performance
  • Matlab coding proficiency
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with program management, customers, contractors, and colleagues
  • Qualified to obtain DoD Secret security clearance
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be able to travel occasionally to contractor and government customer facilities

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in image science, physics, applied physics, or optical science and specific experience in a field that includes the use of geospatial tools for scientific analysis
  • Experience with scene generation models such as SSGM, FLITES, ASSET, DRSIG, or JSIG
  • Past design/evaluation of satellite constellations to accomplish BMD objectives
  • Experience with tracking algorithms to determine track quality of service using object sighting messages from one or more sensors
  • Experience with existing BMD system component pointing and tracking CONOPS
  • Previous EOIR sensor calibration experience
  • Active DoD secret clearance and ability to obtain a DoD TS/SCI security clearance
  • Python language coding proficiency
