This position engages in skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of streets and related infrastructure. Primary responsibilities involve the safe and efficient operation of light, medium, and heavy-duty construction equipment. Secondary responsibilities involve assisting Public Works Street Supervisors in various leadership tasks and performing general labor in maintenance and construction tasks.

Assignments are usually received in the form of work orders to accomplish a specific task. Work is performed under the direction of Public Works Street Supervisors. Work is reviewed through observation during progress and upon completion to evaluate results attained.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Perform Street Infrastructure Maintenance and Repair Tasks (40%): Perform general construction of street infrastructure, including excavation and foundation preparatory work and the forming, pouring and/or paving of concrete and asphalt roads, curbs, sidewalks, slabs and trails. Street maintenance and repair tasks include, but are not limited to, excavation, road patching, street sweeping and inlet cleaning. Sewer maintenance and repair tasks include, but are not limited to, excavation, sanitary and storm sewer repair and maintenance, including cleaning, video inspection and recording, and building and repairing sanitary and storm manholes, inlets and mains. Perform various roadside tasks, including shouldering, sidewalk and ADA ramp maintenance and repair.
  • Perform Seasonal Operations (20%): Perform winter operations such as plowing, salting, applying brine and hauling/removing snow. Perform fall leaf collection operations and the removing yard waste from the public collection site. Maintain storm water ponds, including grass cutting, brush removal and erosion control.
  • Perform Equipment Maintenance and Minor Repair (10%): Perform routine preventive maintenance and inspection of assigned equipment in order to minimize down time and ensure safe and proper function. Preventative maintenance tasks may include, but are not limited to, changing tires, checking fluids, replacing wearable components on equipment attachments and cleaning equipment in preparation of future operations.
  • Maintain a Safe and Effective Work Environment (10%): Operate and maintain equipment, shop and building grounds in a safe and orderly fashion. Equipment operation includes, but is not limited to, single axle and tandem axle trucks, combination vehicles, tanker trucks, vac-all and jet-vac trucks, sewer cleaning equipment, water pumps, tractor backhoes, graders, hydraulic excavators, street sweepers, flushers, light, medium and heavy duty end-loaders, asphalt pavers, melter applicators, light, medium and heavy rollers, road oilers, concrete saws, leaf pickers, tractors, mowers, chain saws, brush chippers, compactors and a variety of hand tools. Use proper safety practices related to job functions, including the proper handling of hazardous materials. Maintain effective communication with supervisors and coworkers and promote a cooperative team environment.
  • Perform Record Keeping Tasks (10%): Accurately manage and process electronic work orders. This may include, but is not limited to, performing pre-operational checks, creating work orders, entering notes, and accounting for hours worked and inventory items used. Complete a daily timesheet. Complete daily paperwork as assigned.
  • Perform Leadership Tasks (10%): Function as a crew leader while on a job site or task: directing, coordinating, evaluating and assisting Street Equipment Operators. Assist the Public Works Street Supervisors in the scheduling, direction and completion of work tasks, including but not limited to, daily work activities, seasonal work, training and evaluating Equipment Operators, and enforcing the Street Division Work Rules, Safety Work Rules and Procedures. As a part of the emergency on call rotation, respond to and address non-business hour emergency requests.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience within the last five years in the road construction repair and maintenance field, operating motorized construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Possess a valid Wisconsin CDL, Class B with no air brake restriction.
  • Possess, or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire, a valid Wisconsin CDL, Class A with N endorsement and no air brake restriction.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with the tools, methods and materials, commonly used in road construction, to repair and maintain asphalt and concrete pavement, sidewalks, curbing, and sewer manholes and inlets.
  • Extensive knowledge of municipal equipment operation and maintenance, including manual transmissions.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work both independently and collectively.
  • Ability to work in an accident free environment.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job, which may include strenuous physical labor such as lifting, raking, shoveling, and ladder work, and to perform such work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to stay focused on job assignments for long periods of time.
  • Possess basic computer, mobile device and clerical skills, including the ability to complete all paperwork and records in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Knowledge, understanding and application of safety practices related to job functions, including the proper handling of hazardous materials.
  • Possess good communication skills, including the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, including the ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees and the public; and the ability to handle situations in a courteous and tactful manner.

Pay: $25.20 - $28.80 per hour
