Position Description

The McElhattan Foundation, a Pittsburgh-based grantmaking foundation, seeks an Executive
Director to lead the organization. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong professional integrity and the ability to work collaboratively in support of the Foundation’s mission of preserving and enhancing human life.

This is a full-time salaried position reporting to the President of the Board of Directors. We believe collaboration among team members is important and best achieved in-person. Thus, we prefer someone willing to work 4 days/week in-person, either at the office, on site visits, or other off-site meetings and events.

Compensation will depend on experience and include benefits. Benefits for the permanent position include medical, dental, and vision insurance; paid sick leave; and paid time off.

The Executive Director will lead the McElhattan Foundation to achieve its strategies and goals in its four program areas:

  • Workplace safety: ending death on the job
  • Education: out-of-school time learning and expanding educator diversity
  • Knox and Franklin, PA: community development
  • End-of-life planning and care

The Executive Director will be responsible for all aspects of operations, including the website, community outreach, partnering with other foundations and organizations, communications, financial management, strategic planning and budgeting, and personnel management. The
Executive Director will manage a staff of four. Fundraising will not be required.

The successful candidate must possess the ability to inspire, motivate, and lead. They must have strong skills in verbal and written communications, program management, public relations, finance, and administration. Experience in philanthropy and/or the nonprofit sector is ideal. Familiarity with WizeHive grantmaking software would be a bonus.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic planning, budgeting, program and project management.
  • Establish performance goals and manage the team’s performance.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other foundations, grantees, community leaders, partners, and volunteers.
  • Participate in Board meetings and other activities.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and revise grant programs as needed.

Our office, in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, has parking and is accessible via public transportation. Relocation assistance is not provided.

Pay: $150,000.00 - $300,000.00 per year
