Lyon Shipyard has an open position for a supervisor for our Structural department (Shipfitting)

Looking for a dynamic individual to oversee repair work on Navy vessels in the Norfolk, VA area. Would like to have strong knowledge of military specifications and work order. Being able to talk to and work with government individuals to complete work on time and budget. MUST be able to lead multiple groups on multiple vessels at one time. DBIDS verification.

Directly initiating and/or implementing a production schedule and man-hour estimates for completion of a job assignment Perform supervisory and management functions related to job cost accounting. Responsible for ordering the required materials and supplies for the completion of jobs. Assigns duties and adjusts work procedures/schedules to meet production schedules. Ensures that the workers accomplish the required job assignments. Maintains an accurate record of employee time and certification records. Ensures that yard safety rules and regulations are upheld throughout the yard. Carries out duties as assigned by the VP of Production for the following departments;

Manages the Fitters build in-place all interior structures, hatches, doors, bulkheads, etc., to complete all the steel work in the ship. Structural Supervisor will oversee the skills in the shops, platens, dry-docks and onboard ships in support of, ship repair and ship overhauls. They will ensure the shipfitters perform safe and effective use of craft related tools and equipment, including but not limited to: millers, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, saws all, come along and chain falls etc. They will obtain GMAW ABS ‘B’ Class Weld Certification for aluminum applications.

The will oversee the basic layout of plates, materials and weldments using basic engineering sketches, drawings, and diagrams with minimal supervision. Oversee the fitting operations with limited supervision using standard ship fitting equipment to accomplish fabrication and ship repair duties. Oversees the working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations. Must have knowledge in burning basic use of torch/light torch); make up plating (align, fit) and knowledge of plating material (CuNi- Copper nickel, Aluminum, stainless steel) ; blueprint (reading, interpret) including sketching; tack welding; portable plasma arc; lay out access cuts and inserts; tank inspections/testing; certifications in SMAW, FCAW or FCA. Ensure the instructions, prints, and work orders for the job and the plans details of working procedures and tools and material requirements are followed. Oversees the fabrication of equipment by cutting, burning, and tack welding various metals.

  • Act as liaison with job estimator. Provide calculations on hours involved, materials needed, and staff required.
  • Recognize and communicate to Foreman any priority projects or problems, such as employee or job costing issues.
  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed, bring problems to the attention of the Superintendent, Safety Manager, QA Manager or HR Manager.
  • Coordinate, direct and lead workers engaged in shipbuilding activities. Assign work to employees, using material and worker requirements data.
  • Supervise crews to obtain top quality workmanship, efficiency, employee satisfaction, morale, communication, commitment, teamwork and pride.
  • Review and verify employee time sheets and submit to payroll on specified days. Ensure that hours are assigned to the proper vessel.
  • Suggest and initiate personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, hires and training requirements. Adhere to the company’s Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Policy when taking part in any employment action or decision, such as hiring, job assignment, layoff or termination.

  • 11. Basic Knowledge of administration and management. Must be able to plan, allocate resources, manage production and coordinate people and equipment.
  • 12. Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in shipbuilding, specific to his/ her department.

Pay: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour
