The Role

Master Millwork Field Project Managers oversee the execution of installation activities on project sites and the personnel that carry out those activities. Field Project Managers are responsible for activity and resource planning, fostering strong relationships with external stakeholders, ensuring that Master Millwork functions as a cohesive team across departments, and creating plans to help field employees develop their skills.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Field Project Managers excel at communicating plans, needs, and risks to their field teams, to our clients, and across departments within our organization. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Set clear goals keep projects on pace and establish expectations for successful outcomes with your team
  • Ask relevant questions and apply analytical thinking when uncertainties arise so that nothing is left ambiguous
  • Report on field issues, QC issues, differing site conditions, delays, disruptions, achievements, project and task status on a daily and weekly basis
  • Steer negotiations with appropriate parties toward desired outcomes
  • Provide constructive feedback to field personnel to aid in their development
  • Identify and communicate risks so that issues get resolved before they can metastasize
  • Report on site conditions that have potential to impact engineering or production in real time
  • Utilize and train others in the use of word processing software, spreadsheets, and project management software systems for day-to-day operations

Field Project Managers are able to manage resources effectively. These include human resources, materials, and relationships. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assess the specific needs of each job and make informed decisions to furnish it with the appropriate equipment and manpower
  • Be organized and adept at the use of planning tools and productivity software to assist with resource allocation
  • Schedule work activities, either manually or through software, to create and maintain timelines for optimal productivity
  • Select the most appropriate personnel for each job site
  • Employ goal setting, performance evaluations, and dedicated training to develop the skills of Foremen, carpenters, and laborers
  • Create and execute plans to hit established targets for installation labor hours.
  • Be accountable for staying within project budgets for installation labor and site materials
  • Develop piecework rates in conjunction with Finance Department
  • Provide coaching and oversight to ensure that materials are being handled and used properly from arrival on project site
  • Train Foremen to report material misuse, defect, damage, insufficient quantity, wrong type, wrong color, etc. contemporaneously
  • Create and maintain productive professional relationships with vendors, contractors, and subcontractors

Field Project Managers provide the necessary leadership and accountability to ensure that projects run smoothly and efficiently. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Clearly understand the project scope and establish clear expectations surrounding changes in scope
  • When the scope needs to change, adapt as needed but maintain control over the scope and how it is allowed to be modified
  • Help team members understand their roles and assignments by defining the responsibilities of subordinates so that every task is assigned to a person and clearly understood
  • Establish and enforce a culture of timely starts and timely completion
  • Support project team with process tools, context, and coaching
  • Verify that work assignments get done in keeping with the expectations that you outlined
  • Provide recognition and motivation to team members. Reward the behaviors and actions that you want to reinforce.
  • Be adept at resolving conflicts between members of your teams to move the project forward without unnecessary disruptions
  • Ensure all work conforms to contract requirements
  • Ensure all work meets quality standards
  • Ensure all work is performed safely
  • Provide close supervision on project punch and close-out
  • Hold project post-mortems to share successes and lessons learned with internal stakeholders
