Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Financial Aid, the Financial Aid Counselor advises students and parents through the financial aid process. This position reviews financial aid applications to help determine financial aid eligibility in accordance with federal and state regulations, and college policies. The main responsibilities of this position include direct customer service, federal verification, scholarship processing, administration of the Federal Work Study program .

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides advising regarding financial aid policies and processes to students, parents, faculty, staff, and the general public. Interacts in-person, by phone, and through email.

Manages the following processes for the office. The Counselor is responsible for maintaining office policy and procedure, reviewing applicable federal and state regulations related to the processes. Discussing necessary changes to institutional policy when regulatory requirements change.

Assists the Director and Assistant Director with packaging as instructed.

Provide back-up assistance to the Financial Aid Receptionist.

Performs Financial Aid Presentations to the public.

Regular attendance is required.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelors Degree, or a minimum of 4 years direct experience. Previous experience in financial aid preferred.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret federal regulations, procedure manuals, and various communications from state and federal sources. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:

Computer skills in Word and EXCEL required. Computer knowledge in ACCESS, PowerFAIDS and EDE software preferred. Knowledge of financial aid programs/websites is preferred. (Ex. COD, NSLDS, Egrands, Admission Pros, SAIG, EdConnect)

Other Skills and Abilities:

This position requires the ability to learn the basics of financial aid including federal and institutional requirements and regulations as well as skills required for administrative duties. Good writing, speaking, analytic, problem-solving and interpersonal skills required.
