ABOUT DOCUMENTARY LAB
Firelight Media is undergoing rapid growth. In the past few years, the organization has gone from managing one flagship program for emerging filmmakers of color to three active programs for filmmakers at different stages of their careers. The Documentary Lab (“Doc Lab”) is a nearly fourteen-year-old fellowship program that provides 18 months of support to filmmakers in the United States from racially and ethnically underrepresented communities directing their first or second feature-length documentary film. Doc Lab provides filmmakers with a $25,000 grant toward their projects, as well as customized mentorship from prominent leaders in the documentary world, professional development retreats, and networking opportunities. The program has grown from a mentorship program to a robust artist development initiative that has supported over 100 emerging filmmakers, and granted over $600k toward productions and distribution in the past decade. The program is poised for continued growth.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
To support the growth of its programs, Firelight Media seeks an experienced artist program administrator who can enhance the Doc Lab program by building on its rich history and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, growth, and sustainability. The ideal Director, Documentary Lab Program (“Director”) candidate is someone who wants to build the capacity of movement-building artists, especially filmmakers of color, through ongoing support, program refinement, and strategic partnerships. The Director reports to the Senior Vice President and works closely with other members of the Artist Program team and the Development, Communications, and Operations team to ensure strategic, timely, and efficient coordination across the organization.

Their responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a program leader by overseeing Doc Lab’s iteration and strategy, implementation, and continuous improvement: Refine, oversee and manage the premiere Doc Lab program at Firelight Media. Ensure continued program excellence and depth, responsiveness, and relevance to changing artist and field needs. Evaluate program impact and efficacy by collecting, analyzing, and reporting out critical data that informs and supports programs, business development, and institutional strategies.
  • Provide team leadership and management: Hire, coach, and retain a Doc Lab manager. Work in close collaboration with external consultants, ensuring that all scopes of work are met. Consider programmatic needs and align future talent strategies to meet programmatic growth efforts.
  • Technical assistance and capacity building for Fellows: Design Firelight Doc Lab workshops and retreats to build the capacity for the next generation of social justice and narrative-shaping documentary filmmakers. Identify ongoing technical assistance needs to ensure Fellows are supported. Define key metrics to determine the strength of Fellow supports.
  • Build and manage strategic partnerships: Cultivate and maintain partnerships with national and regional organizations, public television stations, industry leaders, and funders to engage with and support Firelight Media artist programs. Manage strategic partnerships with industry professionals who will amplify Firelight Media programs to grow Firelight Media’s brand and impact further.
  • Champion Doc Lab and represent Firelight Media to external audiences: Represent Firelight Media at industry events, forums, and festivals. building relationships and tracking emerging issues and trends relevant to Firelight artist programs at a leadership level. Identify opportunities for Doc Lab Fellows to share their work.
  • Collaborate across departments and share learnings: Serve as a thought partner to the Senior VP on positioning and framing Firelight Media’s programming and pushing the field as a constructive disruptor and instigator. Work cross-functionally with senior leadership and staff to ensure coordinated strategy and efficiency across all Firelight Media programs and Firelight Production.

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about documentary films by, for, and about people of color, has strong relationships in various sectors relevant to the success of filmmakers of color and artists in the narrative and storytelling industry, and is enthusiastic about working in a BIPOC-led and -centered fast-growing organization. They are also a people-centric manager that prioritizes cultivating and stewarding relationships across the organization and with organizational partners. The ideal candidate brings these skills to bear in addition to their extensive experience as an artist program administrator/liaison. Additional qualifications include, but are not limited to:

  • Previous experience managing an arts program, especially one that promotes the art of BIPOC creators, with results designing, refining, or scaling a program
  • Knowledge of and excitement about documentary film as a catalyst for social change and furthering social and racial justice
  • Knowledge of current trends in film, social justice movements and issues, arts, news/journalism, and/or the nonprofit world
  • Foundational knowledge of public media is highly desirable
  • Ability to set programmatic strategies and goals with the ability to motivate, inspire, and mobilize a wide and diverse population
  • Flexible, team-oriented approach to problem-solving
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary range: $100K-$115K. Benefits include 100% employer-paid health insurance; 20 vacation days accrued annually; 403b retirement plan with employer matching and one-year vesting period; reimbursable gym membership through employer health care plan; flexible spending accounts for transit and health; and professional development opportunities.
