With your experience,
you will perform scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties, and assist with rearing fish.

The optimal applicant

Our Fish Hatchery Technician,

  • Handles adult fish.
  • Feeds fish.
  • Cleans the pond.
  • Collecting, sorting, and spawning of adult and juvenile salmon.
  • Vacuuming and pressure washing the ponds for cleaning.
  • Egg and fish sampling and picking, this includes weighing and counting salmon eggs and removing deformities and egg mortalities. (These duties require long periods of standing, careful attention to detail, and protocols in often cold temperatures).
  • Clips the fins of fish as part of a marking program,
  • Assists in scanning fish for various tags using coded wire tag wands, pit tag detectors, and other tag-associated equipment.
  • Assists in maintaining proper water flow and rearing environments.
  • Cleaning adult handling area, vehicles and hatchery buildings and bathrooms.
  • Weed eating, raking, weeding hatchery grounds.
  • Small equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Responds to questions from visitors to the facility.
  • Conducts organized tours.
  • Interacts with the public in a polite, professional manner.
  • Identifies the best way to respond when faced with difficult-to-answer questions or when information is not readily obtainable.
  • Follows up to ensure that an answer was obtained.
  • Enters data into forms and spreadsheets; demonstrates proficiency with computerized forms and accuracy in recordkeeping (fish mortality, feed sheets, feed inventory, chemical usage).


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • The work environment is mainly outdoors under all weather conditions. Working in rain and cold temperatures in winter months, and in hot temperatures in summer months.
    • Working during emergency weather conditions such as snowstorms and flooding events.
    • Working in and around water is a daily occurrence.
    • Lifting or move feed up to 44 pounds.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday.
    • Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • None.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Power and hand tools, Forklift, equipment typically found in an office.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interaction with the public.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • GED or High School diploma.
License:
  • Valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least one year of paid or volunteer hatchery experience.
  • Gather and compile data and use sound judgement.
  • Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of available resources and guides needed to help complete forms and documents correctly.
  • Applicable agency policies and procedures.
  • Safety regulations.
  • Basic fish culture techniques; rearing procedures.
  • Water dynamics (e.g. flows, flow patterns, availability, temperature, etc.).
  • Basic math (add/subtract/multiply/divide); calculate and understand quantities and proportions.
  • Computer knowledge; basic understanding of spreadsheets, word processing, database.
  • Calibration of specialized instruments (e.g. scales, Dissolved Oxygen meters).
