NDDOT Starting Salary: $4,863 / month

Summary of Work

  • Automobile Repair
    • Heating and air conditioning repair and maintenance
    • Carburetor and fuel injection systems
    • Brakes and anti-lock system repair
  • Advanced Truck Repair
    • Brakes both air and hydraulic systems
    • Hydraulics and hydrostatic systems
    • Electrical systems and computers
    • Gas and diesel engines; tune-ups and transmission repair
    • Electronic instrument clusters & anti-lock brake systems.
  • Advanced Heavy Equipment, Tractors, Minor Equipment Repair
    • Cooling & electrical systems
    • Steering, brake, gear boxes, clutches
    • Hydraulics and electro-hydraulic systems
    • Transmissions, gas and diesel engine repair, transmissions, electronic instrument clusters
    • Anti-lock and air brake trailers.
    • Rebuild snowplows, push frames
    • Rebuild worn shafts and bearing surfaces
    • Rebuild mower gearboxes & PTO shafts, repair mower decks and hitches
  • Operate Shop Equipment
    • Operate Welding equipment, including oxyacetylene, arc, tig, and wire feed with aluminum & stainless-steel capabilities
    • Operated drill press, chop saws, band saws, and grinders
    • Operate plasma cutter
    • Operate various hand, air and electric power tools
  • Equipment Repair Orders, Time Cards and other Paperwork
    • Use computer system to accurately complete repair orders
    • Fill out time cards to record time, charge to units worked on
    • Read and adhere to all department memos, directives, and policies
    • Use equipment manufactures computer software to obtain updates and error codes
  • Weld, Repair, Fabricate, Parts on Equipment, Trucks and Light Vehicles

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a two-year curriculum in automotive or diesel/industrial equipment technology, and
  • Two years of work experience performing duties similar in type and complexity as those listed in the summary of work.
  • Or, completion of a three-year master technology program and one year of work experience performance duties listed in the summary of work.
  • Work experience performing duties similar in type and complexity to those to be performed on vehicles and equipment like those to be serviced may be substituted for the educational requirement on the basis of two years of work experience for one year of education

(Fleet and Equipment Technician II)*

  • Completion of a two-year curriculum in automotive or diesel/industrial equipment technology and
  • Work experience performing duties similar in type and complexity to those to be performed on vehicles and equipment may be substituted for the education requirement on the basis of two years of work experience for one year of education.

Employee hired must have a valid Class B driver’s permit with air brakes with a cargo tanker endorsement the first day of work. The employee will then have 30 calendar days to take the behind-the-wheel exam and get the class B driver’s license with air brakes and with a cargo-tank endorsement. The district will make the equipment available for the employee to practice driving during these 30 days. Within 12 months and to complete probation, the employee must have possession of a Class A driver’s license with air brakes and with a cargo-tanker endorsement.

Successful applicant must provide required tools on the date of hire. List of required tools is available from any district office.

Employees will not be required to have residence within a specific travel time or distance from the workplace. As determined by the district engineer or division director, employees will at times be required to report to work within 30 minutes in situations involving emergency, storm, or public safety concerns. Employees with residence outside the 30 minute requirement must make appropriate arrangements to make themselves available during such conditions.

Employment of the selected candidate will be contingent on satisfactorily completing the interview process and the required drug test, medical screening, reference check and driving records check.
