SCOPE OF ROLE:

This role requires a passion for working with forest inventory data, statistical software, and GIS technology while fostering strong customer service relationships to achieve our mission of serving as a responsible steward of the environment and a beneficial partner to the communities in which we operate. You will be responsible for managing the collection of quality inventory data, as well as the compilation and loading routine of annual inventory collection projects. The data you manage is foundational to our business and has a significant impact on key decisions we make including sustainable yields, harvesting scheduling, timber marketing, silviculture treatments, long-range planning, land sales and acquisitions.

This role will be responsible for supporting Rayonier’s Pacific Resource Unit in Washington State and Oregon.

Location: Poulsbo or Hoquiam, WA preferred; with the ability to work remotely from home in Washington or Oregon. (Within commuting distance from one of our offices: WA: Hoquiam, Poulsbo, Chehalis or Forks. OR: North Bend)

Travel: 25% of time spent in other forestry field offices within the Pacific Resource Unit.

HOW YOU WILL SUCCEED:

  • Make safety a way of life and commit to “standing in the gap” and fixing it when you see a potential safety risk
  • Identifies where inventory measurements are needed by querying Rayonier’s U.S wide GIS and timber inventory databases
  • Coordinates the development of annual inventory plans and budget with the Forest Planning and Inventory Team
  • Selects contractors, executes contracts and supervises all inventory measurement and audit activities across Rayonier’s Pacific Resource Unit ownership
  • Compiles inventory summary reports that facilitate decision making across the company
  • Collaborates with other members of Land Information Services team to develop processes to compile and upload inventory measurement data while maintaining a data quality assurance program
  • Contributes to timberland acquisition due diligence through the design and implementation of forest inventories and through analysis/compilation/conversion of seller provided inventory data
  • Supports land sales by leading forest inventory design, contractor selection and project management, and data compilation and reporting
  • Completes reviews of harvest schedule outputs to ensure deliverables meet expectations, results are realistic, achievable and sustainable
  • Provides training to both internal and external parties, with topics to include Rayonier’s cruising/measurement procedures and methodologies, use of technology (field and software), and developmental programs
  • Familiar with or desire to develop skills in software programs including R, SQL, MS Access, and SAS
  • Commit to continuous learning, finding new and more innovative ways of doing things and staying current on new advances in forest mensuration topics and technology

WHAT IS REQUIRED:

  • BS degree in Forestry or Master’s degree in Forest Inventory/Biometrics
  • At least two years of practical forestry experience (Forest management, timber marketing, forest inventory, etc.), or curriculum with emphasis on forest mensuration and/or statistical analyses
  • Forest inventory design, basic forest measurement, statistical analysis, good analytical and problem solving skills. Strong basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and ArcGIS
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with customer base, vendors, regulators, contractors, co-workers and the general public in person
