GENERAL PURPOSE: Performs a variety of forestry functions for the Minot Park District's Forestry Department.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. lncumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.


  • Provides assistance in maintaining the district’s urban forest in a safe and healthy manner.
  • Operates various types of heavy equipment including dump trucks, bobcats, pay loaders, tractors, tree spades, stump grinders, brush chippers, and boom trucks.
  • Participates in landscape projects including planting park and boulevard trees.
  • Trims, prunes, tops, and cuts down trees throughout the district; removes tree roots and stumps.
  • Responds to public inquiries and consults with homeowners regarding forestry related matter
  • Inspects trees and shrubs and diagnoses issues with insects and/or diseases.
  • Removes split and damaged limbs from trees.
  • Assists in removing fallen trees and/or tree limbs from buildings and cars as required.
  • Provides assistance in selecting tree species for planting and/or preparing landscape plans.
  • May supervise work activities and/or provide training to assigned personnel as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Associate's Degree in Forestry, AND three years urban forestry experience preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minot Park District will be willing to train the right individual.


Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid North Dakota Commercial Driver's License or willing to obtain.
  • International Society of Arborists (ISA) and First Aid/CPR certifications or willing to obtain.


Required Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of urban forestry.

• Various types of equipment and tools common to forestry work.

  • Safety protocols relative to equipment operation
  • Tree trimming and removal processes.


Required Skill in:

  • Coordinating and performing a variety of forestry functions.
  • Providing assistance in maintaining the district’s urban forest in a safe and healthy manner.
  • Accurately diagnosing tree insects and diseases.
  • Safely operating and maintaining departmental equipment and tools.


Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily outdoors and involves equipment operation, working at heights, and lifting of objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
