The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Perform grounds maintenance duties including grounds cleanliness, shrub pruning, turf fertilization and mowing, landscape equipment operation, pesticide application and landscape renovation around several campus buildings.
  • Maintain campus lawns by irrigating, mowing, edging, hand trimming, fertilizing, using weed control methods, and performing other grounds duties as assigned.
  • Operate and maintain riding mowers, carts, rototillers, lawn sweepers, aerators, salt spreaders, tractors, Bobcats, brush chippers, stump grinders, applicators/sprayers and water tanker with pumps.
  • Additionally, maintain campus trees and shrubs by planting, pruning, watering, spraying, weeding and cleaning shrub plantings.
  • Maintain appropriate recordkeeping and minor equipment operation/maintenance.
  • Required to work overtime for special events.
  • Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies.
  • Place temporary barrels for special events.
  • Construct and install landscape structures including stone walls, tree well grates, patio-stone areas, landscape edging, timber walls/railroad ties, and furniture.
  • Perform snow removal.
  • Make recommendations with supervisor as to needed landscape renovation.
  • Store, secure, use, record pesticides and other chemicals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What are the position essentials required as a Groundskeeper?

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Three years in grounds maintenance including basic experience in shrub pruning, pesticide application, and grounds cleanliness.
  • Demonstrated basic and intermediate skills in landscape renovation, pesticide mixing and recordkeeping, as well as ornamental identification.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematics.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisor and co-workers.
  • Good work organization and problem solving ability.
  • Landscape equipment operation and maintenance (i.e. truck, utility cart, etc).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and remain in compliance with the Purdue University Motor Vehicle Records policy.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, move up to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs. occasionally.
