Head of Children’s Services

The Hotchkiss Library of Sharon, CT seeks an enthusiastic Head of Children’s Services. Our ideal candidate is a creative, customer service-oriented, collaborative, and flexible individual who will plan and implement programs for children of all ages and curate our children’s collection. The Head of Children’s Services must have strong technology skills; excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; and the ability to connect with patrons of all ages. Experience with children is required and the Bibliomation ILS, Evergreen, is strongly preferred.

The Library is undergoing a $3.2 million renovation, accessibility, and expansion project. We are updating our historic facility with the latest in technology, a beautiful new Children’s Reading Room and a multi-purpose programming room. Join our team for this exciting new chapter. We will be moving back to the Sharon Green in early Summer 2023.

The ideal candidate will be available for 18 to 28 hours per week, through August 2023, while a staff member is on maternity leave and the library moves into its expanded facility. Hours may decrease to 18 hours per week in Fall 2023.

Essential Job Functions:

• Running children’s programming, including regular story times, weekly crafts, book clubs, and the summer reading program
• Conducting classroom visits at Sharon Center School and Sharon Day Care, as well as other forms of community outreach
• Maintaining the Children’s and YA collections; weeding, ordering and processing materials; and making displays to promote literacy, programs and materials
• Creating flyers, email blasts and social media posts to promote children’s events and programs
• Checking in, checking out and shelving materials
• Assisting patrons in person and over the phone
• Assisting patrons with technology, computers, online databases, the library’s electronic collections, and internet searching
• Opening and closing at the beginning and end of the workday
• Serving on the Annual Book Signing Author Selection Committee and working at the Annual Sharon Summer Book Signing and other library fundraising events
• Assisting other departments as needed

Temporary Job Functions:

• Assisting director in preparation for and implementation of move back to library
• Managing monthly input of circulation statistics
• Serving as liaison between circulation desk and Bibliomation

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED, college degree preferred
• Extensive experience with an ILMS, preferably Evergreen
• Computer skills, including keyboarding; basic knowledge of MS Word and Excel; familiarity with the Library’s online catalog, website, databases, and other electronic resources
• Capacity to perform detailed work consistently and accurately
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently
• Ability to deal pleasantly and effectively with the public, including upset patrons. Ability to lift and push book carts weighing ≥ 50 lb
• Comfortable working with children of all ages and their parents

Hours: between 18 and 28 hours per week, including one weekend per month.

Employment Status: Part-time, hourly, no benefits

Compensation: $20 to $22 per hour, depending on experience

Reports to: Head of Circulation and Executive Director
