Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC), Environmental, Safety & Health (ESH) Division is seeking a highly motivated Health & Safety Specialist to join our Field Safety team and to support our construction and operations safety program. Members of this team are responsible for the development, implementation and/or management of various safety programs. In this position, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a broad range of Environmental, Safety, & Health duties for assigned SLAC facilities and designated safety programs. You will have the opportunity to interface with a broad range of internal/external client groups and customers. This position reports to the Health and Safety Supervisor.

Note: SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA. Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Under limited supervision, perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the university's environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.
  • May develop and conduct employee and student training, emergency preparedness activities, and/or assurance and accreditation programs.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, and radiological) that could be present in the work area; remediate hazards, and/or recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place.
  • Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazard potential.
  • Provide technical advice and university interpretation of various government regulations and university policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations.
  • May act as a lead or technical expert, and provide direction to less experienced personnel working on health/safety programs.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and three years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s)

The expected pay range for this position is $93,000 to $122,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
