Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource in the largest private mining land package in the U.S. The mine is located in White Pine County, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world, along the southern extension of the prolific Carlin trend. Bald Mountain and the nearby Round Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.

Bald Mountain is an important contributor to the economy of northeastern Nevada and maintains a comprehensive environmental strategy including wildlife protection, habitat recovery and education.

Job Description

Promote activities designed to maintain and to improve health and safety awareness and site safety programs throughout the mine property. Support implementation of policies and procedures under the Health & Safety Program. Assist in safety audits under the Kinross Gold Corporation Environmental Health and Safety Management System.

Job Responsibilities

1. Assist in establishing goals and objectives regarding the development and implementation of Health and Safety programs.
2. Actively develop, promote, and participate in company safety programs.
3. Assist in the development and implementation of emergency preparedness policy and procedures.
4. Assist in the development and implementation of Permit to Work (PTW), Critical Risk Management (CRM), or Emergency Response Team (ERT) standards in addition to procedure and coordination of activities. This would include, but not limited to, incident response, training sessions, equipment purchases, team member recruiting, special functions, etc.
5. Provide information to supervisors, employees, and contractors regarding safe operating procedures.
6. Participate in department audits and facilitate implementation of audit recommendations.
7. Develop, coordinate and present training between employees, contractors, and appropriate outside agencies on a regular basis.
8. Coordinate with department heads the communication of injuries and incident statistics to the appropriate outside agencies.
9. Assist with the development and implementation of trend analysis applications and other tools.
10. Establish and maintain good relations with peers, supervisors, and employees and promote positive attitudes, safe work practices and adherence to safe work standards. Lead by example, provide guidance, and motivate employees to work safely.
11. Keep skills and knowledge up-to-date.
12. Participate in departmental safety meeting and lead meetings when requested.
13. Assist in developing and updating written standards and procedures for all major work activities.
14. Assist in the development and administration of group and individual safety awards.
15. Participate and assist supervisory personnel and / or follow-up on all accident / incident investigations, planned inspections and reports as per company policy to ensure that basic and root causes are determined and actions to prevent recurrence are completed. Ensure that equipment damage and related incident costs are tracked.
16. Participate or represent Kinross during regulatory interactions. Coordinate abatement of any citation and complete the proper reports.
17. Available for the Health and Safety on-call roster.
18. Must be willing to learn all applicable sections of the 30CFR and other relevant standards.
19. Available to respond to medical facility or mine site in an emergency.
20. Punctuality and regular attendance are required.
21. Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to, safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
22. Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
23. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state.
24. Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
25. Maintain accurate records and files.
26. Consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in performance.
27. Demonstrate professionalism and represent the company philosophy and goals.
28. Perform other related functions as assigned by H&S General Foreman and H&S Superintendent.


Education and Experience

1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple and mathematical calculations and keep records.
2. Certification as an MSHA instructor and or the ability to obtain certification is required. Completion of technical courses related to mine rescue techniques; documentation of training required.

  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of the management team.
  • Strong influential, verbal, written, and analytical skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Good working knowledge and skill with a P.C. utilizing Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  • Must be available for shift work, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
