Job Description
Primary Function:
Responsible to administer a complete health and safety program for Smith College precollege program students and staff consistent with the Massachusetts Department of Health, Smith College and the COVID-19 Response Team, the CDC, and Health Care Plan approved by local medical practice.
This is a six-week, full-time position (35-40 hours per week). The primary employment period is June 26– August 5, 2023, with 35-40 hours per week. Hourly rate starts at $39-54 per hour and is commensurate to experience. Compensation can include room and board if desired.
There is additional, part-time, year-round work, including, but not limited to, increased part-time hours in May and June for health care plan review, and health record review and correspondence, time and dates during May - June to be negotiated, with 15-20 hours per week.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Ensure the health and safety of precollege students and staff following established camp policies and procedures and in accordance with MA Board of Health regulations, Smith College and the COVID-19 Response Team, and the CDC. Create and maintain both an emotionally and physically safe health service environment for students and staff.
  • Manage three Health Assistants
  • Manage the oversight of the precollege health center, including inventory, medical logs, training, family and student correspondence and other processes.
  • Perform a health review on all students and staff.
  • Review and maintain Health Forms and other health-related documents through CampDocs for students and staff. Log or review all treatments daily. Uphold patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
  • Perform first aid and nursing care, and dispense medications under the guidance of the signed Standing Orders or original prescription mandate.
  • Pass on pertinent student-health information to the appropriate staff prior to student arrival and as needed throughout the program.
  • Ensure that all prescriptions and medicines are properly labeled and locked in the medicine cabinet or refrigerator.
  • Maintain first aid kits and logs for on-campus, field trips, and any other location that is deemed necessary and appropriate, with weekly upkeep and replenishment.
  • Make daily health inspections of all living spaces.
  • Complete all needed reports and maintain files, submitting reports to the Director of Summer Programs throughout the summer and at the close of the program.
  • Adhere to practices in completing incident reports as per the standards of Massachusetts Department of Health regulations.
  • Establish and maintain contact with the physician on call and the local hospital.
  • Facilitate emergency medical issues with initial medical assessment and triage.
  • Provide a list of medical supplies that are necessary to stock the health center. Update the list and maintain accurate inventories of supplies and equipment. Submit a closing inventory at the end of the program.
  • Set a good example for students and staff. Be a positive role model in terms of responsibility, sportsmanship, punctuality, respecting the environment, cleanliness, and manners.
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings, where applicable.

Minimum Qualifications: Certified Licensed Practical Nurse with Medication Administration Certification. Registered Nurse certification preferred. Licensed in the state of Massachusetts and current CPR certification.

  • Working knowledge and experience in medication dispersal, OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens standards and other standard health practices.
  • Experience and certification with medication delegation
  • Experience keeping accurate records of treatment and establishing and implementing treatment procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and deal with potential health and safety hazards in a residential environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to provide staff and students with instruction and training regarding medications, treatment and protocols.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts Department of Health regulations is preferred.
  • Strong composure and interpersonal skills to manage people and medical needs in emergencies.
