Highway Maintainer I, LG 9: $29,536.00 - $38,894.40

Highway Maintainer II, LG 11: $31,844.80- $43,347.20

40 Hours per week

Earn up to a $5000 Winter Maintenance Incentive.

Half paid at the beginning of the 2022 winter plowing season and the remainder paid at the end of the season 2023!

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highway Maintenance, District 5, has full-time vacancies for Highway Maintainer I, IIs.

SUMMARY :
HIGHWAY MAINTAINER I:

Assists in performing year round highway maintenance activities and projects involving operation of vehicles, trucks, manual and specialty labor skills in the operation of hand tools, power tools and motorized equipment used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and for emergency traffic services for the NH State Highway System.

HIGHWAY MAINTAINER II:

Performs year round highway maintenance activities involving the operation and servicing of mechanized highway equipment used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and for emergency traffic services for the NH State Highway System.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
HIGHWAY MAINTAINER I:

Operates trucks and services and performs field adjustments to vehicles, power tools, and mechanized equipment used in the maintenance and construction of facilities and of the State Highway System.

Maintains hand and power tools to insure readiness and proper operation; repairs and troubleshoots issues as necessary.

Monitors the application of highway materials to insure highway safety and efficiency of use.

Performs traffic control operations by directing the travelling public including flagging and erecting traffic control signs. Places traffic control devices on roadways/construction sites and performs traffic control activities to ensure work zone safety.

Performs routine highway maintenance activities under adverse conditions with exposure to high-speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and disaster situations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Traverses varying terrain and performs tasks that involve heavy physical labor such as drainage construction, building and equipment maintenance/ repair; this includes the ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.

Must respond immediately in performing winter maintenance and/or other traffic emergency activities as needed on a 24-hour per day basis, throughout the entire year.

HIGHWAY MAINTAINER II:

Operates 2 axle commercial trucks, tractors with loaders and backhoes, and related highway equipment to provide all season safe conditions on assigned highways. Is responsible for the maintenance and limited repair of highway equipment in accordance with Department policies and industry standards.

Performs routine highway and roads maintenance activities under adverse conditions with exposure to high-speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and during disaster situations, to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Traverses varying terrain and performs tasks that involve heavy physical labor such as drainage construction, building and equipment maintenance/ repair; this includes the ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.

Observes winter storm road conditions and independently determines appropriate action for plowing and spreading of abrasives and chemicals based on training and policy.

Erects proper traffic control signs and devises to protect a work zone and to adequately warn the traveling public of any road or safety concerns; directs traffic as necessary.

Supervises small work crews that performing the same routine highway and other facility maintenance functions; provides on-the-job training to entry-level members of crew in areas of maintenance, work methods, safety and environmental practices while performing similar work. Reports any observed, safety, and/or environmental hazards and violations to supervisory personnel.

Must respond immediately in performing winter maintenance and/or other traffic emergency activities as needed on a 24-hour per day basis, throughout the entire year.

HIGHWAY MAINTAINER I:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential.

Experience: Three months of work experience preferably in a field related to highway maintenance.

License/Certification:

Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license. The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency. The applicant must obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) with appropriate endorsements prior to completion of the probationary period.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

As of June 23, 2020, offers of employment are conditional upon the individual obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless the candidate is currently employed by the State of New Hampshire.

Must receive a negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations and US DOT requirements.

Must be able to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on an intermittent basis.

Must have a telephone or acceptable means of communication and be available 24 hours per day.

All accountabilities must be conducted in full conformance with all risk management, safety and environmental standards, regulations, and with administrative orders.
