The Natural Resources Specialist 2 is a mid-level, experienced field worker seasonal position that assists Natural Resources Division staff in day-to-day or project related management, i.e., maintenance and restoration, or research and monitoring of the natural resources in Cleveland Metroparks and northeastern Ohio.

Works in the Watershed Management program to assist with hydrologic and water chemistry monitoring as part of district-wide aquatic ecosystem assessments and resource management. Reports to Stream Restoration Ecologist at West Creek Reservation. Works at reservations across the Cleveland Metroparks District.
Essential Functions:
  • Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required.
  • Performs data entry and verification and assists in the development of reports and maps related to natural resource management or resource projects and activities as directed. Safely and competently operates and maintains equipment including but not limited to forestry measurement tools, portable data collectors and related equipment.
  • Inventories and assess culverts for fish passage and maintenance needs.
  • Inspects and assists staff and volunteers with green infrastructure maintenance.
  • Downloads, maintains, inspects, and calibrates water level recorders, flow meters, water quality sondes, and precipitation gages.
  • Geomorphic stream assessment using various methods (Bank Erosion Hazard Index, pebble counts, cross-section and longitudinal survey, stream feature inventory).
  • Downloads and manages data from monitoring instruments.
  • Develops reports and/or models utilizing data.
  • Occasional outreach activities (field trips, special events, workshops) for various audiences.
  • Georeferencing historical aerials and aligning stream channels.
  • Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  • Oversees natural resources-related volunteer projects.
  • Assists Natural Resources and other cooperating agency staff in other duties as apparent or assigned.
Requirements:
  • Must have completed two years of college courses with relevant course work and/or educational experience in natural resources, natural sciences, i.e., biology, geology, hydrology, etc., forestry, wildlife management, environmental science or related fields. At least six months of field experience, research experience, or other directly relevant job experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license under the laws of the State of Ohio for all positions listed in the addendum except for Natural Resources Management Crew.
  • Knowledge or coursework in wetland and stream hydrology and monitoring experience preferred
  • Familiarity with any combination of the following preferred: water level recorders, BEHI, pebble counts, stream survey techniques.
  • Good data entry and management skills, strong skills with Excel preferred
  • GIS/GPS familiarity preferred
