SUMMARY:

Under general direction of the Department Manager, functions as an Industrial Hygienist Technician within the Industrial Hygiene Department by providing project and technical management; proposal, work plan and report writing; quality assurance and quality control functions; field work, including interior and exterior projects in all weather conditions; and, travel as required to meet client and project needs.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintain a working knowledge of the applicable federal, state and local regulations applicable to industrial hygiene, asbestos, and lead-based paint activities, including, but not limited to; Illinois Asbestos Abatement Act and Code; Commercial and Public Building Asbestos Abatement Act and Code; Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA); Asbestos School Hazard Abatement Reauthorization Act (ASHARA); Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations; Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) regulations; National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP); U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD); and, other applicable regulations as they pertain to industrial hygiene, asbestos and lead-based paint activities.

2. Maintain required asbestos, lead and other industrial hygiene registration, certification, and licensing in Illinois. In addition, at the request of the Department Manager, obtain and maintain same in other States as required to meet regulatory, project and client needs.

3. Perform on-site inspections for environmental and industrial hygiene hazards in commercial and public buildings. Activities will include the preparation of detailed inspection reports, in accordance with EDI Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

4. Provide technical assistance and support for EDI projects, including project design support, site work plan support, air sampling expertise and general industrial hygiene department support.

5. Provide on-site technical project management and air sampling services during environmental hazard abatement and industrial hygiene projects. Activities will include the preparation of detailed inspection reports, in accordance with EDI Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

6. Prepare detailed technical written reports providing results of industrial hygiene services.

7. Prepare detailed written proposal for services as directed or requested.

8. Review project reports as directed or requested for compliance with the EDI quality assurance/quality control SOP.

9. Assist in the review, revision and development of Department policies as assigned or directed.

10. Performs other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to successfully perform the responsibilities listed above. This position requires travel to central Illinois. A Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety & health, environmental sciences or related field-from an accredited four-year college or university along with a minimum of four years of experience, or the equivalent thereof is required. Certification in industrial hygiene services such as asbestos, lead, industrial hygiene is required to maintain the position and grow with the company. Licensure and professional certification in industrial hygiene services is preferred. Professional certification in other states (to meet regulatory, project, and client needs) is preferred. A valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance are required. The work associated with this position requires the willingness to work a flexible schedule as project needs dictate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; use and wear personal protective equipment as required for the specific task; use a ladder; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
