In this Information Technology Specialist position, you will use your expertise in principles, concepts, and methods to support Information Technology systems and services within the Office of Information and Technology in the Field Support Directorate of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

There are currently openings in the East Texas Region at Laredo, Del Rio, and Marfa, Texas. You may select only ONE location where you would be willing to work.

This position starts at a salary of $57,118 (GS-9 Step 1) with promotion potential to $107,680 (GS-12 Step 10).

Duties:

In this position, you will become a key team member of homeland security professionals to provide technology service, implement projects and deploy systems to reduce downtime and maintain operational availability. Typical work assignments include:

  • Diagnosing and resolving problems, including researching, evaluating, and providing feedback on problematic trends and patterns in response to customer reported incidents.
  • Interacting with stakeholders as the Subject Matter Expert to provide IT guidance and solutions and providing customer training as required.
  • Installing, configuring, integrating, troubleshooting, optimizing, and maintaining customer hardware and software to maximize system availability and monitors network performance in accordance with information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirement: Applicants must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.

  • Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Customer Service - Works with internal and external clients and customers to assess needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, and satisfy expectations.
  • Oral Communication - Expresses information effectively, considering the audience and nature of the information.
  • Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

Along with the four competencies listed above you must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience described below to qualify based on experience.

Experience: You qualify for the GS-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Installing, testing, maintaining, and upgrading network operating software systems
  • Evaluating new system engineering technologies and effects on the operating environment to improve operational efficiencies.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving technical problems with the design and delivery of network services.
  • Ensuring the integration and availability of all systems components, e.g., procedures, databases, policies, software, and hardware

Education Substitution: GS-09: Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in an accredited college or university, may be substituted for experience at the GS-09 grade level. Such education must demonstrate the skills needed to do the work. For this position a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks is qualifying. One year of fulltime graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 36 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 2 years of full-time study requirement.

Experience: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Analyzing, planning, integrating, and configuring network systems hardware
  • Diagnosing and resolving network problems, hardware/software interface and interoperability problems
  • Testing, installing, configuring, and maintaining networks including hardware, middleware and software to ensure conformance to national standards consulting
  • Evaluating new hardware and software technologies for potential inclusion into the enterprise

Education Substitution: GS-11: Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in an accredited college or university, may be substituted for experience at the GS-11 grade level. Such education must demonstrate the skills needed to do the work. For this position a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks is qualifying. One year of fulltime graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 54 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 3 years of full-time study requirement.
