Position Purpose

  • To provide a successful, safe, and supervised nurturing setting for children while they are in the infant-toddler environment.
  • To promote the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of all children in care.
  • To encourage parent involvement in all aspects of the program.
  • To develop individual goals for children, provide an ongoing assessment on progress, and facilitate transition into preschool.

Essential Job Responsibilities: Performance Indicators


1. Health and Safety
Supervise and monitor children by sight and sound at all times.
Respond appropriately to crisis or emergency situations that may occur.
2. Individualization
Attend to special needs, specific interests, strengths, and concerns.
3. Curriculum and Assessment
Promote all children's social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.
Provide small and large group experiences, choice time, music and movement, large and small motor activities, skill development, meals, and effective transitions between activities.
Encourage experimentation, exploration, problem-solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice-making; ask open-ended questions and listen respectfully to the answers.
Assist in preparing classroom materials to support developmentally appropriate curriculum plans.
4. Parent Involvement & Community Partnerships
Provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement in the child’s learning environment.
5. Utilize Information Systems to support child/family and agency outcomes.
Document all significant issues.
Monitor and report child abuse as specified by program policies.


Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings, training, and appropriate professional development activities, occasionally requiring overnight stays or travel.
  • Assure general maintenance and security of the facility and assist with inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Other duties as requested.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience/Documentation Required

Minimum educational requirement of a high school diploma. Hold NC Early Childhood Credential or earn within one year of hire. Experience in child care is preferred.

  • Ability to apply Infant-Toddler Development theory in daily activities and adapt to children's individual needs.
  • Ability to set and maintain professional boundaries with families.
  • Keyboarding skills, computer literacy, and familiarity with various applications such a database, word processing, e-mail, and internet.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual English/Spanish skills helpful.
  • Employment is conditional pending criminal background check, electronic verification of employment eligibility, and approval by the School Board

Physical/Mental Abilities and Processes

  • Frequent significant decisions to assure developmental progress of children.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise infants and toddlers and ensure a safe learning environment including the ability to monitor and respond to events going on at all times in indoor and outdoor play areas. This includes the physical ability to move quickly in order to respond to children who are very active and may need redirection in order to ensure their safety or the safety of others in the environment.
  • Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation.
  • Ability to
    • lift up to 40 pounds
    • interact with children inside and outside in gross motor activities
    • stand for extended periods of time to monitor children in the classroom and on the playground
    • participate in floor activities with children
    • walk up and down stairs
    • sweep, mop, and vacuum floors and clean bathrooms on a daily basis
