Bayfield County through funding of the Northwoods Cooperative Weed Management Area (NCWMA) is hiring two seasonal invasive species technicians to work from May through August 2023. The exact dates will depend on the candidates' availability. Work will focus on managing terrestrial invasive species through surveying, mapping, and manually removing plants or chemically treating plants with herbicide. They will also work on weekends completing Clean Boats Clean Waters (CBCW) surveys at boat landings and washing boats with a portable hot water, high pressure washing unit. Invasive Species Technicians will provide information to residents and tourists through informal conversations. Most of the work will be in the field without direct supervision. Data entry will be a regular part of the position.

Examples of Duties

  • Identify, survey, and record invasive plant species.
  • Conduct manual and chemical treatments of invasive plants.
  • Work in the field without direct supervision.
  • Collect and enter data in Excel and databases.
  • Assist in educational programs about invasive species.
  • Become a certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator in Wisconsin. (The certification process will be funded by the position once hired.)
  • Inspect watercraft for invasive species.
  • Engage and educate visitors at boat launches.
  • Perform watercraft decontamination with a hot water pressure washer.
  • Drive a county vehicle to sites, towing and operating a power-washer that is mounted on a trailer.

Qualifications

Minimum of one year of college in a natural resources field. Knowledge in identifying terrestrial and aquatic invasive species and an understanding of invasive species concepts is preferred. Must be responsible, detail-oriented, flexible, and have good interpersonal communication. Must be able to occasionally lift a maximum of 50 pounds and work outdoors in inclement weather. A valid Wisconsin driver's license is required. Experience driving a truck and towing, attaching , and backing up a trailer is preferred.

Supplemental Information

Positions are up to 40 hours/week from May through August. The work schedule will be Wednesday through Sunday.
