Summary

This position completes investigations of criminal complaints, organized crime, gang activity, drug distribution and trafficking, and other criminal activity. The position involves crime scene management and interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects. This position may work directly with other agencies including the FBI, KBI, DEA, ATF, and ICE. This position is under the supervision of the Investigations Sergeant.

Investigate all criminal activity

  • Investigate criminal cases; this may include burglary, theft, crimes against children, drug/narcotics/controlled substance violations, homicides, gang activity, assaults, sex crimes, cybercrimes, and all other property and person crimes. Investigations may require employee to process initial crime reports; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; manage crime scene; schedule of examinations; act as victim and family emotional support; conduct searches (body or property); conduct surveillance (in-person and digital); and collect/process evidence.
  • Prepare all required documents (i.e., investigation reports, files, search warrants, and affidavits for investigations and prosecutions, subpoena for inquisitions); execute if applicable.
  • Investigate non-criminal cases including industrial accidents, overdoses, and unattended deaths.
  • Cultivate and manage informants.
  • Patrol in assigned area to deter, detect, and monitor criminal activity, gang activity, traffic violations, and drug activity.
  • Serve arrest and search warrants, apprehend subjects and effect arrests, complete prescribed searches, and serve civil process papers and tax warrants.
  • Investigate all other matters as assigned (i.e., alcohol enforcement, asset seizure, illegal gambling).
  • Oversee and direct patrol employees at crime scenes.

Complete additional support duties

  • Maintain assigned vehicle and equipment, to include cleaning and servicing.
  • Perform evidence inventory; destroy invaluable evidence.
  • Testify in court and effectively communicate with individuals/groups outside of the organization as needed.
  • Provide background check of applicants in the hiring process.
  • Maintain and update gang intelligence information for patrol.
  • Provide crime prevention assistance to the public, assist persons with domestic problems, and transport and place children in protective custody as required.
  • Deliver death notifications.
  • Attend meetings, training, workshops, and classes as needed for continuing education.
  • Perform Patrol duties as needed; see Patrol descriptions.

Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.

  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills.
  • Bi-lingual preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; special skills relating to youth preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, Microsoft Office Suite, and/or related software.
  • Ability to accurately complete detailed forms and reports
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine a proper course of action to be taken consistent with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to assist, coordinate, or create programs with preexisting agencies that would promote crime reduction with our youth.
  • Ability to complete physical inspections of vehicles and crime scenes and detect criminal and traffic violations.
  • Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, fairly, consistently and with respect for the rights of others.
  • Ability to investigate complaints about property damage or personal injury.
  • Ability to safely operate an emergency response vehicle at high speeds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Knowledge of Kansas statutes related to crime and traffic.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance procedures and operation in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of known gang members and their activities.
  • Knowledge of use of law enforcement equipment, including restraint devices, weapons, communications equipment, and traffic control equipment.
  • Knowledge of advanced tactics for executing high risk warrants/arrest, hostage and informant rescue/protection, and riot/crowd control.
  • Valid Driver's license
  • 40 hours annually of law enforcement continuing education
  • Specialized training in modern scientific investigative techniques.
