Ladders for Leaders provides paid professional internships to NYC youth between the ages of 16 and 21. Applicants are evaluated based on academic performance, response to an essay question, and résumé quality. Selected applicants will undertake 20-30 hours of pre-employment training designed to teach essential workplace readiness skills and professional etiquette. Participants will then have the opportunity to interview for summer internships at a variety of companies.
As part of the Commonpoint Queens Ladders for Leaders staffing team, the Job Placement Specialist provides essential support to prospective student interns in the areas of job/career readiness and in the process of matching participants with appropriate internship placements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Job Placement Specialist will:
  • Review resumes to ensure that the applicant qualifies for the position they selected.
  • Understand the job description and qualifications provided by companies and have the ability to find qualified candidates by reviewing resumes provided.
  • Search for potential candidates in the applicant database system based on varying criteria including their major/career goal, educational level, skill-set and geographic location.
  • Review participant resumes and provide feedback and edit suggestions for both layout/design and content.
  • Requires the ability to navigate multiple spreadsheets and other Google forms and to update them accurately throughout the job matching process.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with participants during the job matching process via phone, email, and texting.
  • Attend staff meetings and collaborate with other Ladders for Leaders staff members.
  • In addition to vetting students for appropriate matching to internships, the Job Placement Specialist will also be required to conduct mock interviews as part of the job-readiness training/support. Using sample provided questions the Job Placement Specialist will coach and evaluate students’ interviewing skills to enhance their performance prior to the competitive employer interview. Mock interviews need to keep pace with placement efforts with notations being made after each one is conducted.
SPECIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION
High School Diploma. Current undergrad, graduate students, and recent graduates.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with Google drive, spreadsheets, forms and docs
  • Ability to work within deadlines and, at times, under pressure
  • Effective organizational abilities and detail-oriented
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
Hours: Part-time, 25 hours/week
