In Prince George’s County, we are also responsible for developing and maintaining the public’s recreation programs.

The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George’s County. The Facility Services Division (FSD) is the largest Division within the Department and provides high quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all the parks and recreation facilities within Prince George’s County and its customers. We have six major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry, Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (FMT, Heavy Equipment and ADA) and the Administration section.

Examples of Important Duties

The Carpentry unit falls under the operational supervision of the Building & Structures section, which provides construction, routine and emergency repair, renovations and alterations and preventive maintenance to over 430 park buildings and structures.

Reporting directly to the Sr. Trades Shop Supervisor, the incumbent would lead, coordinate and monitor day to day work of the Carpenter II’s, Carpenter I’s and Park/General Maintenance Workers. The incumbent provides day-to-day leadership for the teams and ensures projects completion, works with supervisors to review plans, blueprints and engineered drawings, plans, assigns and checks work of teams, prepares materials requisitions and estimates of tools, equipment supplies and materials required to complete projects, renovations/upgrades of facilities such as kitchens, bathrooms, offices decks and recreation centers by reconfiguring existing spaces, changing current uses/configurations, adding/upgrading and conducting repairs, as necessary.

The incumbent will consistently replace existing structures with higher quality, more efficient systems and products. They will also help to work with the Department’s Facilities Accessibility and ADA Validation team to ensure that our doors & lock systems, ramps, bathrooms, signage, etc. are ADA compliant. The incumbent will also participate in the renovation and replacement of bathrooms, pavilions, pole sheds and other smaller new construction projects. As Carpenter III, you will also participate in the repair of historical buildings by matching door and window trims, ensuring that the products/techniques used previously are the same used to complete a project today.

Additionally, for most projects, you would need to review construction plans or meet with other trade shop professionals (such as HVAC, Plumbing or Electrical) to determine the accuracy of carpentry standards, material/supply needs and to provide work schedules and carpentry project completion timetables. As projects progress, you would also track man hour and material usage, as well as ensuring that the jobs are done properly according to project blueprints or County Building Codes. Experience with Microsoft office, Excel, Word and other programs as well as knowledge of technology use in the construction field.

The ability to manage multiple projects and teams and deliver projects on time and on budget is essential. Providing support, documentation and project management functions will be a significant part of the roles and responsibilities for this position.

A strong working knowledge of ADA Compliance Codes, OSHA regulations and Prince George’s County building codes is a must. The ability to coordinate the work of others effectively and to work without direct supervision is also very important, along with the ability to function in a team environment. As a Lead Carpenter III, the incumbent will also have a broad knowledge of building products and a range of experiences in both Commercial, Institutional, Industrial and Residential carpentry. The incumbent will assist the Sr. Trades Shop Supervisor with employee performance evaluations and manage shop projects in absence of supervisor. A firm, supportive supervisory style is also needed.

Salary Range $50,076-$88,688

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • Completion of an approved carpentry apprentice program or four (4) years of progressively responsible carpentry experience.
  • Four (4) years of carpentry experience at the journey level including two (2) years of experience directing the activities of other skilled carpenters.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total eight (8) years.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, depending on area of assignment may be required and must be in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.
  • Pass Commission medical examination.
