The Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) at Columbia University, under the direction of Dr. Ali Gharavi, is a growing program that comprehensively integrates genetics and genomics into research, training and patient care. The faculty appointment will be in the Department of Medicine at the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (VP&S) of Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). The IGM has a team of genetic counselors that plays a key role in the interface of patients, physicians, and researchers. Under supervision of the Co-Directors of Genetic Counseling at the IGM, the genetic counselor will have both clinical and research responsibilities.

Clinical Responsibilities include to provide genetic counseling to patients and family members in subspecialty clinics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/New York Presbyterian. In this role, the genetic counselor will conduct intake screening, risk assessment, explain nature and scope of testing procedures; act as a liaison between the clinical department and the molecular diagnostic laboratories; communicate results to patients and families and write summary reports; and develop and present in-service education to physicians and other health care providers to increase genetic testing fluency among providers of the Medical Center. Additionally, the genetic counselor will be involved in the implementation of new opportunities for the provision of genetic counseling across clinical and research subspecialities.

IGM Research responsibilities may include enrollment of patients into different IGM genomic research studies, serving as the primary contact for both potential patients and referring physicians, review of patient medical records, coordination and implementation of study procedures, return of results to referring physicians and/or patients as indicated, and providing post-test counseling/education/support to patients and families. The genetic counselor may also be responsible for submissions to the IRB and other regulatory bodies as needed, maintenance of study files and databases, and ensuring overall adherence to written protocols and regulatory requirements. Genetic counselors within the IGM have a key role in variant interpretation, analysis, and expected pathogenicity in relation to the patients’ phenotype. In addition, the genetic counselor may present research result findings to a variety of healthcare professionals and facilitate consensus interpretation during results discussion meetings. The genetic counselor will have opportunities to present research findings at national conferences and to co-author publications involving novel genetic findings, and other duties as assigned.

As part of their faculty appointment, the genetic counselor will also be given the opportunities to serve as lecturer, fieldwork supervisor, or mentor for students enrolled in Columbia University Genetic Counseling Graduate Program.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling
  • Board eligible or board ncertified as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling

Key Skills:

  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Conversational Spanish (preferred but not required)

Salary Range: $89,500 - $98,000

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
