Basic Function

Catalogs, manages, and curates the accumulated information, publications and knowledge of the agency, making these resources accessible for meeting the needs of employees, executives, board members, contractors, students, the media, and the public.

Example Of Duties

  • Gathers and analyzes agency information in multiple formats and assists in the preparation of narrative reports of findings
  • Catalogs information using standardized subject headings, thesauri, and vocabularies
  • Develops and maintains On-line Public Access Catalog (OPAC) and resolves cataloging and filing conflicts
  • Develops and maintains serials control, circulation control, acquisition systems, and digital access
  • Provides reference services and assists Library/Archive patrons with locating and using finding aids, reports, documents, journals, non-print material, microfiche, and digital information services
  • Recommends selection of library materials and disposition of donated and un-cataloged items using collection development policies
  • Assists in making improvements to library operating procedures
  • Analyzes agency research needs and adjusts work plans to meet information objectives
  • Researches transportation industry technologies and innovations
  • Develops and continuously refines the research library resources archival collections to support agency mission and objectives
  • Conducts outreach to research library and archive stakeholders
  • Coordinates with the archives and the records management center to reduce duplicative collections and maximize electronic/online access
  • Plans and implements digitization projects to contain linear shelf growth and maximize online accessibility
  • Assesses performance measurement of the Integrated Library System, websites, social media sites, and other access points for users
  • Performs outreach with members of the Special Library Association's Transportation Division, National Transportation Knowledge Network (NTKN), and the National Transportation Library
  • Leverages the resources of other transportation research collections through inter-library loan, cooperative scanning projects, and professional relationships; initiates and responds to inter-library loan requests
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Requirements For Employment

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education

  • Master′s Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution


Experience

  • One year of experience as a Librarian, Archivist, Curator, Records Analyst or using applicable information/data base systems


Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements

  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications (PQs) are used to identify relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) as determined by business necessity. These criteria are considered preferred qualifications and are not intended to serve as minimum requirements for the position. PQs will help support selection decisions throughout the recruitment. In addition, applicants who possess these PQs will not automatically be selected.

The following are the preferred qualifications:

  • Experience curating and managing print and digital archival collections.
  • Experience maximizing access and findability/discoverability of archival resource records.
  • Experience developing and curating traditional and digital exhibits.
  • Experience collaborating with other libraries, archives, and museum professionals.
  • Experience developing and curating an oral history project.

Knowledge:

  • Theories, principles, and practices of library science and information management
  • Standard and specialized reference and bibliographic sources
  • Library of Congress Subject Headings, OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules), RDA (Resource Description and Access), and ILS (Integrated Library System)/OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalog), or other cataloging and finding aid systems
  • Research principles and techniques
  • Special libraries, archives and research services


Skills:

  • Classification and cataloging of research library and archive materials
  • Conducting technical reference and bibliographic research
  • Gathering, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting information
  • Analyzing complex situations, identifying problems, and recommending solutions
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Interacting professionally with various levels of employees, board members, consultants, students, and public patrons
  • Using computerized library information systems
  • Operating personal computers, laptops, tablets, and other devices


Abilities:

  • Create and edit internet/intranet and other online accessible resources
  • Gather, analyze, and report performance measurement statistics
  • Understand Metro's mission and responsibilities and apply supporting collection development policy
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
