Under the direction of the Behavioral Health Manager, the Behavioral Health Social Workers provide a wide variety of social services including assisting clients with supportive services designed to overcome financial, health, or family problems; conduct individual or family assessments to determine services needed; provide agency services when appropriate; and refer clients for other community services when needed. Services to clients may take the form of protective actions on their behalf or on behalf of the community. Works in conjunction with other Social Workers and staff to coordinate services as necessary.


Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Provides social services per Wisconsin Statutes, court policies, and/or requirements of the program, state, or federal guidelines
  • Accepts referrals for department/agency services
  • Conducts thorough assessments through interviews, home visits and collateral investigations.Determines the range of services needed by individuals and their families for preventative, remedial or rehabilitative services in a timely manner
  • Explains the scope of the agency's services and discusses the client's rights and responsibilities in relation to the use of such services in a timely manner
  • Determines eligibility for funding of services
  • Provides case planning and case management services; conducts regular case evaluations and develops and updates case plans accordingly
  • Maintains case records, completes necessary documentation, court reports, forms, and data collection in a timely manner and in accordance with program requirements
  • Participates in committees and task forces as assigned as a liaison to various community agencies and organizations
  • Advocates for client needs
  • Maintains confidentiality ofclient-related information and maintain respectful treatment of clients
  • Prepares for and testifies in court as necessary or required
  • Adheres to approved social worker principles, methods and practices, including the National Association of Social Worker's (NASW) code of ethics
  • Maintains skills and competence levels as policies and regulations change by attending department/staff meetings and participating in continuing training as required and appropriate
  • Deescalates potentially dangerous situations regarding self and/or client
  • Assists and provides back up to other Social Workers as necessary or required
  • Preforms other related duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice or related field
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with drug and alcohol population, mental health population and/or vulnerable adults
  • Must hold a valid Wisconsin Social Work Certification. If not certified at the time of application for employment, must have applied to the State of Wisconsin for a Temporary or Training Certificate prior to starting employment and obtain certification within six months of hire
  • Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Driver's license and have access to transportation suitable to complete necessary work out of the office
