Position: Life Support Systems Manager/Aquarist Manager

Reports to: Director of Animal Care

Job Purpose: Sea Turtle Inc is looking for an experienced and engaged individual with a deep knowledge of and experience in life support systems to join our team. The Life Support Systems Manager/Aquarist will be responsible for the daily maintenance of all aquatic animal life support systems (LSS) that support the mission of rehabilitation of sea turtles at Sea Turtle Inc. The ideal candidate will have a keen understanding of life support systems, competency to work independently and in a group setting, and is highly organized with great attention to detail. The LSS Manager will be responsible for water quality, a safe animal environment for all sea turtle rehabilitation patients and residents, and an expanding and diverse collection of assorted fish and other small marine animals.

Sea Turtle Inc is in the process of building a new rehabilitation center, so experience in the design/implementation of LSS Systems would be a plus. Responsibilities will also include plumbing and installation of heater/chillers and pumps for temporary hospital tanks for use during construction.

Key responsibilities:

  • Daily/Weekly/Monthly maintenance of all existing sand filters, RK2 Protein Skimmers, and holding tanks for sourced water
  • Daily water quality analysis utilizing a variety of analytical instrumentation
  • Design and manage LSS systems for continued improvements, upgrades, and new exhibits
  • Cleans tanks and removes algae from tank windows
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Work closely with leadership during the design and implementation of new exhibits
  • Proficient in troubleshooting LSS issues that may arise and any other conditions that could cause injury or illness to sea turtles
  • Required to train and manage interns and volunteers on aquarium keeper duties and safety requirements, as well as updating Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Daily record keeping for tank/filtration maintenance and animal observations when needed
  • Responsible for water sourcing and sterilization, vacuuming, water changes, backwashing, algae control
  • Responsible for communication with vendors and ordering/budgeting inventory
  • Installation and repair of new and existing equipment

Other duties could include but are not limited to:

  • May assist in adding various species to our current collection
  • Serves as an instructor or guide to provide conservation, education experiences for visitors
  • May assist in animal care
  • Will respond to emergency care situations as they occur (cold stun, hurricane, natural disaster)
  • Assisting with and carrying out animal husbandry protocols, including diets and enrichment
  • Other duties as assigned to support the mission of education, conservation, and rehabilitation

Education & Experience Required: Minimum 3-5 years of LSS experience. Experience working in a zoo or aquarium is preferred but not required. Must have experience in installation, repair, and maintaining equipment. A degree in biology or chemistry is preferred with knowledge of the care of marine animals and other aquatic life related to diseases, behavior, and life support system requirements.

AALSO Life Support Operator and/or Water Quality Technician 2 or above preferred

Physically able to swim, climb, lift up to 50 pounds, and work in hot/cold outdoor environments.

Valid US Driver's License required

Must be eligible to work in the US

Date: November 2022

Salary: Commensurate with experience. Full-time salaried position with paid vacation and benefit plan available to candidates after 90 days of employment.
