The San Juan Area is a very beautiful and fun place to work. Not only do we get to work in one of the most unique areas in Washington State but we also get to travel to and from the job site by boat, depending on the project and weather of course. Our crew handles the maintenance of all Park infrastructure in the San Juan area as well as vessel and vehicle repairs.

Duties

Under the supervision of a Construction & Maintenance Project Supervisor, this position will be assisting and contributing towards all aspects of park maintenance within the San Juan Park Management Area. This position will be supporting Moran State Park and the Marine Park in operations, particularly when there are larger projects or when marine conditions are not favorable for safe vessel operation.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Complete routine maintenance procedures on park facilities including mooring buoys, docks, piers, ramps, compost toilets, buildings, bridges, roadway surfaces, boat launches, restrooms, fencing, swim areas, etc.
  • Assist construction and maintenance staff with park area water, sewer, and compost toilet systems.
  • Independently operate vehicles, vessels, and equipment.
  • Transport materials and supplies.
  • Maintain, inspect, and repair motorized equipment, power tools, hand tools, etc.
  • Direct staff in the maintenance of park landscaping.
  • Operate, maintain, and instruct staff in the use of equipment.
  • Responsible for mowing, weed eating, brush clearing, hazard tree removal, and clearing trees from the roads and trails.
  • Reporting safety issues and safety reports.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid (unrestricted except for corrective lenses) driver's license.
  • Two (2) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
  • Boater Education Card must be obtained within the first sixty (60) days of employment.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office products, such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Experience leading and/or supervising lower-level staff.
  • Experience in driving assorted vehicles, farm tractors, mowers, dump trucks, trails, backhoe, road grader, car, stump grinder, brush chipper, brush hog, bucket trucks, and etc.
  • Experience working with various hand and power tools such as hammer, nails, chisel, saw, level: ground tools such as shovel, rake, pick, axe: mechanical tools such as wrenches, pliers, grease gun, torque wrench; power tools such as circular saw, drill, grinder, sander, and chain saw.

UNIFORM INFORMATION
All Maintenance Mechanic 1 employees are required to wear a uniform. A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of a Maintenance Mechanic and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee. All Maintenance Mechanic 1s will receive 6 shirts within the first year (2 shirts per calendar year after the first year), 1 jacket every 3 years, 1 baseball cap every year, 1 safety vest every 3 years, and a clothing stipend of $200 per year, and a $250 boot stipend every 2 years. Uniform stipends are intended to offset the cost of clothing worn in the workplace such as pants, boots, raingear, etc.
