Position Summary:

Assumes a leadership role based on clinical expertise and judgment in caring for patients. Leadership responsibilities involve delegation, interviewing/hiring personnel, performance evaluations and corrective action as appropriate, and teaching other staff members. Responsible for 24-hour clinical management of respective areas. Focuses on clinical aspects of care, influencing and effecting changes with respect to the needs of the patients, family and total health care delivery system.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for activities related to Surgical Services, Post Anesthesia Care Unit and Central Supply including but not limited to planning, implementing, evaluating and providing patient care through the use of hospital and nursing standards
  • Functions as a role model in nursing, demonstrating competency in clinical judgment and extensive knowledge base
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise in the extension of the nursing process and supports peers in its application
  • Responsible for departments overall goals and objectives
  • Accountable for writing, reviewing, implementing, updating and clarifying policies and procedures to medical staff, patients and visitors
  • Accountable for the development and implementation of the standards of care for the departments, quality assurance programs and integrates the results into practice and policy
  • Communicates violations of the Nurse Practice Act to the State Board of Nurse Examiners
  • Interviews, hires, trains and assigns nursing personnel

  • Maintains staff competencies through the development of standards of performance, evaluation of performance, and initiation and/or recommendations for personnel corrective actions
  • Develops and maintains effective communication mechanisms and working relationships with staff, physicians, and patients/families and between the unit and other departments
  • Develops and delegates direct care to patients from assessment to discharge from unit throughout peri-operative care
  • Makes rounds and discusses current status of patients and procedures with physicians, nurses and other staff as needed
  • Coordinates, obtains, and utilizes time, equipment, supplies, staff, and resources necessary for the delivery of peri-operative care
  • Manages financial aspects by preparing, justifying and controlling the budgeted productivity standards and expenses
  • Manages all staffing schedules including vacation coverage on a daily and ongoing basis
  • Provides clinical resources to staff regarding the level of care provided
  • Evaluates nursing assessment and care of patients in the department
  • Represents the department through participation, leadership role on committees, task forces, etc. on a voluntary and appointed basis at the department and hospital level
  • Maintains professional growth of self and other staff members through seminars, workshops, and professional/civic service organizations as hospital representative
  • Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory requirements, and is responsible for maintaining department compliance
  • Serves as a liaison with affiliated Medical Centers of maintenance, implementation and operational status of Surgery software systems; may act as a system resource for other surgery departments in the system
  • Verifies all surgical cases for accurate charges and documentation
  • Performs other department related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Required:

  • BSN or actively enrolled in a BSN program or Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Currently licensed by State of Michigan
  • ACLS and BLS
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a leadership role
  • Demonstrated interest, ability and expertise in respective area of nursing
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:

  • MSN or Master’s Degree in related field
  • Teaching experience
  • Knowledge of computer based programming and statistical analysis
