Job Summary

Savage Engineering (http://www.savagepress.com) is seeking skilled Machinist to help contribute to the building of hydraulic presses and heavy machinery through the use mills, lathes, and other large and handheld machines and machine tools to cut, bore, and shape metals into large and small parts per mechanical schematics and drawings. Savage designs and builds custom-engineered machinery, so each project is different and supports manufacturing in diverse industries including automotive, medical device, power generation, military applications and munitions, railroad, and oil / gas to name a few.

Responsibilities and Duties

Job Duties:

  • Set up, operate, and tend manual lathes, manual boring mills, and manual knee mills.
  • Install, replace, or change machine parts and attachments, according to production specifications.
  • Clean, lubricate, maintain, and adjust equipment to maintain efficient operation, using air hoses, cleaning fluids, and hand tools.
  • Operate overhead crane.
  • Coordinate with other staff for the purpose of completing projects/ work orders efficiently.
  • Move freight, stock, and other materials to and from storage and production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, and containers, by hand, forktruck, crane, or other equipment.
  • Read work orders or receive oral instructions to determine work assignments and material and equipment needs.
  • Record numbers of units handled and moved, using daily production sheets or work tickets.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Confer with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
  • Recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
  • Knowledge of how to set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Mathematics - Using basic mathematics to solve problems; read tape measures to 1/32 of an inch, and read calipers and micrometers to 0.0001 of an inch.
  • Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Time Management - Managing one's own time and the time of others.
  • Reading Comprehension - Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Able to read basic blueprints.
  • Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Language: must be proficient in English; reading, comprehending and understanding.

Education and/or Experiences

  • High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) preferred
  • JVS / Trade school certificate; required.

Computer Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of computers.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; toxic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Personal Protective Equipment Requirements:

  • Safety Glasses – ANSI Z87 with side shields everywhere in the plant
  • Sturdy Work Shoes – hard sole / leather uppers (no tennis shoes unless designated to meet OSHA safety standards)
