I. BASIC FUNCTION
The major function of this position is to provide operational leadership for IMT Wheelhouse. This role will also be expected to ensure that Illinois Marine Towing logistics and vessel operations operate seamlessly at all times by providing proactive planning, communication, management, and incident prevention to fulfill customer requirements.
II. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist vessel moves to ensure safe and efficient use of company equipment and resources; monitor traffic that boats produce; and communicate with docks and other barge customers to coordinate moves. Understand boat procedures and Vessel Emergency Response Plan. Investigate, review, and provide disciplinary action and future solutions where required for all vessel and personnel incidents and accidents. Inform management of vessel and vessel personnel trends and performance. Review, evaluate, approve, and recommend assignments and promotions. Work as a team to continually improve the overall abilities of the department and continued success of Illinois Marine Towing. Be the spokesman for the wheelhouse personnel, advocate for their concerns and leadership to ensure that all needs are being met from both management as well as employees. Testing and resolving company computer-based program issues Respond and guide wheelhouse personnel in areas of navigation, dispatch orders, CEMS, and safety when necessary. Establish and maintain positive employee relations and communications with entire workforce. Assist in development of skills, leadership, and professional training of licensed mariners. Provide presence at all weekly crew change training meetings, conduct classroom training as pertains to leadership and policy information. Bridge the gap between the vessels and the office. Ensure accountability is being maintained by captains as the manager of their vessel. Represent IMT interest in industry groups and on regulatory committees.

Perform other duties as required and directed by management. Carry out the Business Philosophy, Code of Conduct, and mission of Canal Barge Company, Inc. and Illinois Marine Towing.
III. TRAITS & ATTRIBUTES
1.Must be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally with office personnel, vessel crew, and dock personnel both verbally and in writing.
Must be able to get along and work well with others in close quarters. Must be flexible and able to work any work schedule. A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required. A valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (T.W.I.C.) is required.
IV. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
The Marine Superintendent reports to the General Manager of Northern Operations. The Marine Superintendent will provide daily supervision to the Crewing Department, and all vessel personnel.
V. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
1.5-7 years of progressive supervisory experience.
Must be safety conscious, detail-oriented, good communicators, and be able to accomplish work tasks independently. Marine transportation experience preferred. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to build strong relationships and work effectively with vessel captains, customers, and crewing department. Strong computer skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks and situations simultaneously. Strong organizational skills. Ability to be self-managed while working effectively as team to meet company goals. Knowledge of any applicable USCG regulations. Master of Towing License preferred but not required. Must be available to work “on-call” on a rotational basis. Undergraduate degree preferred but not required.
