About Marketing and Communications

The Marketing and Communications team informs and engages staff, customers and community partners. We support all areas of DHS to effectively tell the stories of our customers and staff, while inspiring narratives and engagement.

The marketing and communications specialist is a key member of the team, serving as a team leader in communications, marketing, and/or public relations work by managing, planning, developing, designing, coordinating, and monitoring a variety of marketing and communications campaigns for the department in alignment with DHS’ mission of partnering with the community to protect those in harm's way and help all people in need.

Additionally, the Marketing and Communications team serves as a creative thought partner, working closely with the Executive Management Team, Mayor’s Office, Internal Divisions, and other Citywide Communications teams.

About the Position

The marketing and communications specialist at Denver Human Services will have experience performing professional, specialist level communications, marketing, and/or public relations work by planning, developing, designing, coordinating, and monitoring a variety of promotional and informational campaigns.

The key components and responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Leads internal communications efforts to keep DHS staff informed and engaged
  • Assists with and/or develops strategic marketing plans for the work area that includes marketing and media and communications tactics and ensures implementation of all campaign elements
  • Develops, manages metrics reports and outcomes for strategic marketing plans
  • Supports with management of content calendar and disseminates information across multiple DHS channels to expand brand visibility and reach
  • Develops a web and social media presence and keeps abreast of current industry trends on a variety of platforms and tailors and promotes internal and external agency initiatives
  • Implements marketing and promotional programs/campaigns/events including advertising strategies, timelines, collaboration with business/community partners, and researches and negotiates rates with vendors
  • Develops the budget for marketing and/or public relations programs/campaigns and works with team to approve and monitor allocations and expenditures
  • Provides assistance during crisis management and/or communications during emergency situations
  • Provides management with updates and information regarding changes and new legislative issues as it pertains to the marketing and communications of programs and services
  • Assists team on internal communications by acting as a conduit between management and internal audience, provides feedback from internal audience to managers, and supports with disseminating of newsletters, informational materials, and other related documents to facilitate communication
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with community and business organizations and other stakeholders and fosters collaborative relationships that benefit the organization
  • Works with vendors for communications efforts and develops and manages contribution campaigns including messaging, branding, and creation of supporting materials
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

About You

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Strong writing skills and familiarity with AP style
  • Proficiency in another language is not required, but preferred
  • An ability and experience establishing and maintaining relationships with agency leaders and stakeholders, community, and other government departments
  • Experience developing and measuring marketing and communications projects for impact
  • Direct experience leading projects from creation to implementation
  • Strong relationship building skills, and an ability to provide inspiring marketing and communications counsel to other leaders and teams
  • Experience supporting community, incorporating community voices, and experience supporting equity and inclusion through communications outreach
  • An ability to co-manage crisis, conflict, and be responsive to national, state, or local emergencies
  • Three (3) years of experience in the communications field (journalism, communications and/or public relations.) Two (2) years of experience at the type and level of functional and/or operational management

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications or a related field
  • Experience: Three (3) years of full performance, professional level experience performing marketing and/or public relations functions including research and analysis, developing public announcements and publications, and developing marketing and/or public relations strategies
  • Education & Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of posthigh school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
