Who We’re Looking For

We have an immediate opportunity for a Materials Lab Technician. This position produces infrared glass. The Materials Lab Tech supports our Materials Scientist for characterizing materials and other processes such as BD-2 recycling.

Job Functions/Requirements: Materials Lab Technician

Primary job functions are listed below but may change without notice.

  • Oversee glass production including:
  • Clean and dry ampoules.
  • Cut and clean glass rods/plugs.
  • Operate a glovebox (antechambers, etc.)
  • Batch raw materials according to the boule traveler.
  • Operate vacuum pumps and vacuum ovens.
  • Use a torch to seal the ampoules.
  • Operate furnaces and transfer material between furnaces at high temperature.
  • Keep track of inventory in the glovebox to be sure you have materials needed each day.
  • Work closely with engineering on process improvements and new developments.
  • Manage open work orders (issue and receive materials).
  • Document process parameters and results.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills You Need:

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Good organizational habits.
  • Ability to manage ongoing process requirements.
  • Must have good work initiative, flexibility with job requirements and schedule, and be very detail oriented.
  • Experience using the following: Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Occasional standing, reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Must be able to read, write, and speak fluently in English.
