Mechanic

Function: Train to perform all requirements of the appropriate Mechanical Job Classification job under the close direction and/or instruction of personnel that are more experienced or a supervisor.

NOTE: As each part of the job is learned, it should be understood that subsequent work on that phase of the job will not receive the benefit of the close guidance, direction, or instruction from others.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must be enrolled in the Mechanical training program (Spec. DQ24200, Current Revision). Upon completion of successful training (assuming acceptable on-the-job performance) the incumbent will automatically progress to the Maintenance Mechanic B job. However, in the event such trainee job incumbent were to (a) drop out of the training program, (b) fail to complete the Maintenance Mechanic training program within a 52 week period from the date of accepting the Trainee job classification, (c) fail any part of the training program, (d) fail to demonstrate reasonable progress in the Mechanical Trainee classification the incumbent will automatically be removed from the trainee job classification and be processed in accordance with job failure procedures.

Must also be able to provide approved personal tools necessary to perform the job (Spec. DQ24204, Current Revision, Form TR-018)

Under the direct guidance of a Maintenance foreman, group leader or qualified ‘A’ Mechanic be able to:

• Troubleshoot, repair, adjust, and maintain plant production and/or plant service equipment.
• Use prints, drawings, oral communication or observations of machine/equipment malfunction to determine the probable source of failure or service requirements.
• Disassemble equipment and replace or repair defective parts, reassemble and make necessary adjustments to attain specified operating results.
• Perform lubrication, preventative maintenance, and periodic operation checks on assigned equipment as instructed.
• Maintain and repair all material handling equipment.

Trainee will need to become proficient at:

• Following all safety procedures such as LOTO, confined space, ladder safety, fall protection, hot work permits, hydraulic safety, lift truck and aerial lift operation.
• Following all applicable installation codes such as NFPA, NEC, ASME, ANSI, OSHA, etc.
• Operation and use of oxy-acetylene torches and equipment.
• Troubleshoot, repair and explain the components of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Troubleshoot, repair and explain the components of various forges and presses.
• Troubleshoot, repair and explain the components of various pumps, gearbox, drives, bearings, and sealing systems.
• Operate lathes, shears, drill presses and milling machines.
• Become trained in the operation of powered mobile equipment to facilitate movement, placement, and/or repair of equipment at walk speed or less. This includes various types lift trucks, scissor lifts, aerial lifts and boom lifts.
• Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of assigned area(s), machines, tools and equipment. Always observe company policies and procedures.
• Perform each phase of the operation in full compliance with all company, state, and/or federal safety and environmental regulations.

EDUCATION:

• A graduate with an A.A.S degree or Certificate from an accredited vocational trade school or equivalent military program and successfully pass job-related skill assessment tests.
• Minimum 4 years’ experience as an industrial millwright could qualify for entrance into the accelerated training program.
• Candidates without an A.A.S degree, certificate or applicable industrial experience must be enrolled in the extended training program.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Pass visual, hearing, and physical tests and successfully complete Powered Industrial Truck Operator Training course per standard policy.
• Pass color vision requirements test.
• Minimum 4 years’ experience as an industrial mechanic
