Our Public Works Departments Vehicle & Equipment Division (V&E), seeks a responsible, skilled technician to join the V& E team as a Mechanic II.

This position is responsible for performing skilled mechanical maintenance and repair to ensure the safety and reliability of the Villages fleet of vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
Duties include, but are not limited to, performing preventative, routine and diagnostic maintenance on gasoline & diesel auto fleet, tractors, buses, grounds/construction maintenance and other specialized equipment for all of Public works; maintaining detailed records for timesheets, equipment and parts, equipment condition, repair costs; performing preventative maintenance of all repair orders within our computerized maintenance management system (CMMS); keeping a clean and organized work environment inside and outside; troubleshooting wiring, hydraulics, engines, tier 4 diesels, standard diesels, small engines, and vehicles; remaining current on innovative equipment offered throughout the industry; working cohesively with Mechanics to ensure a productive work environment; as well as working to provide staff with necessary equipment throughout the year.

Additional responsibilities include actively participating in snow and ice control operations as needed and adequately prepare for the upcoming season; making suggestions for improving equipment or repair procedures; and using independent judgment to develop creative solutions to problems that may arise on the job.

Must be available to perform service calls during snow operations and in emergency situations as needed.

Schedule for this position: for non-winter months (April 1st through November 30th), hours would be 6am-2pm. Winter months (December 1st through March 31st), hours would be 2pm-10pm.

Regular, consistent attendance and availability for overtime including after hours, evenings, weekends and holidays are required.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
This position requires a high school diploma or GED supplemented by technical training in automotive and/or truck system maintenance and repair. A minimum of four (4) years of prior related mechanical experience is required. The ability to perform duties under adverse working conditions and the ability to meet deadlines and work well with others is required. Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in vehicle maintenance, the ability to perform gas or electric welding, design, implement and revise maintenance procedures, and perform emergency mechanical fabrications is also required.

Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of vehicles and related equipment; electrical, hydraulic, clutches, standard/automatic transmissions, differentials, disc and drum brakes, air bag systems, suspension, steering & suspension components, ABS brake & drive train operation, emissions, computerize engine and transmission controls maintenance and repair procedures; ability to diagnose mechanical malfunctions, and understand service manuals and wiring diagrams; working knowledgeable of shop theory, operation, and methods and procedures used in the repair and analysis of bus and truck propulsion, steering, and “s” cam air brake systems; ability to read, interpret, and understand diagrams, schematics, blueprints, sketches, bulletins, and procedures; and the ability to use pertinent test equipment including computers, gauges, and various types of hand held, mechanical and electronic testing or diagnostic equipment is necessary.


Possession of a class ‘B’ CDL with air brake, combination, tanker and passenger endorsements or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire is required for this position.

ASE certification is preferred. Medium-heavy truck certification preferred.

Failure to obtain or maintain the required driver’s license or required certificate within the first 6 months of employment will result in termination of employment.

Compensation & Benefits:
Hourly Rate: $32.55 per hour, based on qualifications. This full-time position, represented by the AFSCME Union, is eligible for the Village of Orland Park’s comprehensive employee benefits program which includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and an employee wellness program. Retirement benefits through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) are provided along with the option to participate in a 457(b) plan with Nationwide. The Village of Orland Park also provides for paid vacation, personal, sick days, and holidays.
