LOCATION: These are regional positions located in the Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consist of: The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipū, and The Clinic at Kapa’a. Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and the Kaua’i Region Clinics are all part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Medical Assistants assists the clinical licensed staff by performing a variety of tasks to ensure that necessary patient care and related technical work are provided, including any other duties assigned.

The Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) will be responsible for independently performing the full range of practical nursing care and related technical work and any other duties as assigned.

These positions may frequently require intense work activity and the ability to handle many processes simultaneously while prioritizing primary functions. Positions must interface with administration, providers, staff, and public and private agencies within the community and must have the ability to use tact and diplomacy in ensuring that department standards are maintained. A high level of confidentiality is required. These positions will report to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Clinic Nurse Manager), position no. 57326, or its designee.

Candidates for these positions are subject to be assigned to work with different specialties and in other clinic locations within the Kaua’i Region organization and are subject to work on shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on the operational needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

MEDICAL ASSISTANT – FULL PERFORMANCE

Licensure: Current, valid driver’s license.

Certification: Evidence of certification is required.

  • Medical Assistant Certification (CCMA) from the National Healthcare Association (NHA); Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists (AMT); or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) must be obtained at the time of appointment.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers certification from the American Heart Association.

Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience as a Medical Assistant in an Outpatient Clinic or similar health institution setting assisting professional licensed clinical staff in the provision of care to outpatient patients. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of emergency medical practices, techniques, and procedures; functional anatomy, and human physiology.

Desirable Qualifications: Ability to handle emergency situations in a calm manner; ability to communicate and work effectively with distraught or agitated individuals; demonstrated proficiency in the application of all of the knowledge and abilities, specified below for the Full Performance level, in providing the full range of services to a caseload of patients. Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and work rules of the work site.

LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE – FULL PERFORMANCE

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure: Valid license with the State of Hawai’i as a practical nurse at the time of appointment (Evidence of licensure is required); Current, valid driver’s license.

Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers certification from the American Heart Association.

Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience in a hospital or similar health institution as a (1) licensed practical nurse, (2) licensed vocational nurse, or (3) registered professional nurse. Such work experience must have involved the performance of a variety of personal care, nursing care, and related technical work for a caseload of patients and required and demonstrated possession of the knowledge of practical nursing principles and practices including patient age groups and the developmental process characteristic of these age groups; and the ability to apply them in providing care/treatment that is appropriate to the age, medical condition and/or developmental status of the patients served; and observe, record and report on the general and specific physical and mental conditions of the patients, and the signs and symptoms which may be indicative of significant changes in the condition of such patients.

Knowledge of: the nursing process; body structure and function; principles of asepsis; universal precautions; infection control; principles of administering medications; patient preparation for prescribed treatments and procedures; data-gathering techniques; interpersonal communication skills; alternative methods of communication for patients with special needs; environmental and patient safety; patient rights; individualization of care, including religious, cultural and developmental influences; patient age groups and the developmental process characteristic of these age groups; team participation in care planning and evaluations; therapeutic and life-saving procedures; specialized equipment; maintenance of optimal body functioning and prevention of complications; principles of body mechanics and assistive devices; comfort measures; obvious signs of emotional and mental health problems; chemical dependency; adaptive and maladaptive behavior; sensory deprivation and overload; abusive and self destructive behavior; concepts of wellness; reproduction and human sexuality; birthing and parenting; and growth and development, including dying and death.

Ability to: Apply practical nursing principles and practices; read, write, speak, understand and communicate effectively with others in English; maintain records and prepare reports; respond quickly and take appropriate action in emergencies; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective relationships with other staff, patients and others; possess an understanding of multiple cultures; and keep current in the field.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of these positions which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.

COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT

COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation.
