The Mental Health Counselor provides information on mental health and chemical dependency services to older adults and the community. This position links older adults with community resources and assists older adults to obtain services through facilitation and advocacy while maintaining a case load of 12 or less counseling clients.

This position will address the issue of mental health and wellness in older adults including screening for depression; one-on-one counseling to reduce symptoms of depression, grief and anxiety; advocacy with medical providers; assistance as needed in accessing available services.

This is a hybrid-remote position, with the first 30 days onsite at our Lynnwood WA offices for training, and then onsite thereafter as needed for meetings, trainings, and events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities*:
Information and Service Referral

  • Conducts client intake interviews and screening assessments by phone or in person to determine client needs
  • Provides detailed information to callers on resources specific to mental health and chemical dependency
  • Facilitates referrals to appropriate services or programs
  • Responds to crisis calls in accordance with agency crisis and emergency response protocols
  • Counsel family and community members or other appropriate persons on managing complex client situations; provides supporting as well as resource information
  • Helps callers identify alternative or informal resources when community resources are not available or not appropriate
  • Conducts in-depth, often complex interviews to determine if the situation indicates the need for more intensive follow up by phone; independently determines referral point(s) and makes additional community/ family contacts as needed
  • Interacts with other service providers and referral sources to create effective access to services
  • Assists with monthly and annual statistical reporting

Mental Health Counseling*

  • Administer the Geriatric Depression Scale or other depression screening tool to non-institutionalized Snohomish County residents.
  • Refer clients whose scores indicate mild to moderate depression to their physicians and other health care professionals for follow up diagnosis or treatment.
  • Short-term mental health counseling, grief counseling, family mediation support and improving communications skills. Willing to provide counseling virtually, over the phone, or in-home as appropriate to meet the needs of the client.
  • Consult with mental health service providers and other health care professionals.
  • Provide additional client support services as needed.
  • Regular and routine attendance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in relevant field (social work, gerontology, psychology, counseling, human services) required
  • Two (2) years of paid experience providing direct services with focus on mental health
  • Access to reliable transportation to client homes and other venues around Snohomish County
  • Demonstrated ability in oral and written communication and the ability to relate well with a diverse population
  • Training or experience in interviewing skills
  • Ability to problem solve and work in stressful situations
  • Ability to provide information and work with individuals, groups, family members and other caregivers to promote self-help
  • Knowledge and experience with the screening process for eligibility requirements and ability to identify unmet needs and service barriers of clients
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with various programs and services in the community to ensure effective service delivery and non-duplication of service
  • Ability to maintain records of activities and contacts according to establish project procedures.
  • Experience working with databases; effective working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint); comfortable navigating in Microsoft Windows environment and using internet browsers
  • Must be fully vaccinated per program or agency requirements.

  • Associate level or full licensure preferred
  • Experience working with elder and disabled populations preferred
  • Experience with diverse communities
  • Fluency in other languages in addition to English

Work environment and physical demands:*

  • This work is performed in an office environment, staff's place of residence and/or in public venues.
  • When necessary, the ability to work in a semi-open office setting with frequent in-person interactions and numerous interruptions.
  • Must be able to use full range of senses including hearing, sight, touch and smell as needed to complete the job's essential duties.
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds occasionally related to equipment/supplies for public presentations.

SUMMARY OF BENEFITS*
Employees working 25 hours or more are eligible to enroll in medical, dental, vision, basic life, and critical illness insurance. Employees scheduled for 25-29 hours per week are considered part time and eligible to enroll with an increased cost-share. Employees working 20 hours or more per week receive 11 designated paid holidays plus 2 "floating holidays", and new hires accrue Vacation time at a rate of approx. 1 hour for every 18 worked (approx. 15 days per year). All employees accrue Sick time at a rate of approx. 1 hour for every 22 worked (approx. 12 days per year). Employees age 21 and older are able to enroll in our 401K plan immediately upon hire and, after one year worked and at least 1000 hours worked, will be eligible for our matching program.
