Job Description


PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Accurately reads water meters on assigned routes and records readings on digital hand-held registers; walks long distances (approximately 7 to 10 miles/day) to meter locations in various weather conditions carrying necessary gear; bends and lifts water meter lid in order to read meter.
  • Cleans out meter boxes; cuts grass around lids; bails water out of meter box and uses shovel to remove dirt as needed.
  • Checks to ensure that meters are functioning properly and reports defects.
  • Hangs informational notice tags on customer’s doors.
  • Performs re-reads of meters from weekly assignments as needed.
  • Operates a City vehicle; refuels and maintains cleanliness and upkeep of vehicle.
  • Follows safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Answers customer’s questions when necessary.
  • Refers unusual questions or occurrences to supervisor.
  • Makes changes in routes as necessary.
  • Assists in compiling and completing information for work reports, studies, safety meetings, etc.
  • Assists meter service representatives in performing their duties when necessary.
  • Perform other related work as required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Frequent exposure up to 80% of work time to dirt, dust, and extreme temperatures. Frequent exposure to poisonous insects, snakes, weeds, or plants. Lifting meter
lids weighing up to 50 pounds.


Qualifications


Education / Experience / Background

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience involving public contact or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • City of Moore geography and street locations.
  • Map reading.
  • Reading, recording, and accurately entering water meter readings.
  • Basic mathematical calculations.
  • Understanding and communicating policies, procedures and services of the department and referring customers to other department services as needed.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.

Required Certification / Licenses / Training

  • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license and satisfactory motor vehicle record.

Physical Requirements

Ability to read meters at expected standard rate. Deal with unfriendly pets. Work requires physical effort associated with brisk walking for extensive periods of time (approximately 7 to 10 miles/day) under varying weather conditions and standing, kneeling or squatting relieved by lesser periods of sitting or operating a vehicle. Ability to crouch, bend, unlock/twist, remove/replace meter lids several hundred times daily. Good vision is required, either uncorrected or corrected. Ability to lift and carry light (15-25 lbs.) meter lids frequently and moderately heavy meter lids (25-50 lb.) occasionally. Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
