Job Summary
Affiliate managers are baseball professionals that comprise a remarkably small collective. Across the world, there are less than 250 people that can say they manage an MLB Affiliate Baseball Club. In the Pittsburgh Pirate Organization, managers are asked to build players capable of winning future championships in Pittsburgh through organizationally identified best practices and personal creativity and innovation. This job has multiple facets that are equally important and challenging to balance. Our organization identifies high EQ leaders with growth mindsets that seek challenges and set the example. Remember, your staff and players are always watching.
Responsibilities:
Cultural Leader: Create a cohesive team culture that supports the players’ psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) that lead to intrinsic motivation.

  • Develop staff and players through empowerment and delegation.
  • Build a fun and competitive environment.
  • Treat players as people first. Managers set and enforce their own rules.

Baseball Teacher: Teach the game of baseball, written and unwritten rules to players and staff. Managers teach:

  • Appropriate situational effort
  • Emotional control
  • Provide support through the successes and failures of their entire club: players and support staff.

Tactical Expert: Develop winning players through winning practices. Managers are expected to develop expertise in:

  • Bullpen management
  • Lineup construction
  • In-game decision making
  • They must navigate relationships with umpires and opposing staff while keeping the player and organization’s best interest in mind.
  • Managers learn to balance prospect playing time needs with game-winning intentionality.
  • Development is driven by winning.
