Position Summary

As a member of the Mobile Health Team, the Mobile Health Support Worker is responsible for a variety of administrative and clinical tasks essential for the efficient care of patients including scheduling appointments, registering patients, performing basic medical assessment (vital signs), and assisting patients with insurance enrollment for state, federal and private insurance schemes. The Mobile Health Support Worker will spend the majority of time worked in homeless shelters assisting patients and providers.All staff are required to treat patients in a timely and professional manner , document their work in the practice management system and the electronic medical record and keep their work areas properly stocked, cleaned, and in compliance with applicable regulations.This position reports to the Mobile Health Program Coordinator.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Registration

  • Complete registration process for patient appointments, including demographic and insurance verification, practice management system data entry and revision, payment collection, chart creation, and other clerical work as necessary.
  • Assist patients, or refer them as necessary, with questions and completion of forms or applications related to their insurance coverage, including Medicaid Presumptive Eligibility (MPE) applications, AllKids applications, Newborn Medicaid patients (BNOCY), HMO PCP transfer requests, Medicare and HMO enrollments, and secondary coverage issues.
  • Become familiar with and follow current protocols for all of the above-listed functions, as well as other functions as necessary.

Medical Assisting

  • Accurately perform basic patient assessment activities (e.g. heights, weights, temps and blood pressures) based on existing protocols or provider requests.
  • Administer tests or surveys, complete EMR forms (ASQ, Edinburgh, growth charts, pap smear, etc.), and provide other services as required according to the age, condition, and physical needs of each patient.
  • Collect and test specimens as required (urine, sputums, pregnancy tests, etc.)
  • Thoroughly, accurately, and promptly document all service rendered in the electronic medical record for every patient.
  • Perform all tests, procedures, and other services according to the policy and procedure of LCHC, notify the appropriate supervisor in a timely manner of instrument or procedural problems when performing the same, and direct questions concerning the same to the persons in appropriate authority over the service in question.
  • Be knowledgeable of and in compliance with CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA and JCAHO regulations for safety, infection control, equipment operation, confidentiality, and other applicable areas (e.g. patient identification and standard precautions).
  • Run instrument and test controls, monitor and replace needle and syringe containers, maintain and sterilize equipment and instruments, monitor and maintain inventories, and perform other tasks as needed to maintain a safe and well functioning work environment.
  • Participate in proficiency testing as required by LCHC or departmental policy to ensure that proper standards of care are being maintained.

Insurance Enrollment

  • Effectively communicate with patients to help them understand the benefits and differences of the insurance programs and requirements for their participation.
  • Thoroughly, accurately, and promptly document all services rendered in the appropriate internal systems for every patient.

Patient care, customer service, and other universal working standards

  • Greet all patients in a kindly spoken and courteous manner, inform them of the status of their visit (where they should go next, when their visit is over, when they can expect to get results of tests, etc.), and thank them for utilizing LCHC
  • Regularly check mail, e-mail and voicemail and respond promptly and professionally to all inquiries.
  • Attend to shared responsibilities in each work area, including answering phones, cleaning, stocking, and organizing Mobile Health Kits and storage, and assisting with orientation and training of other employees as needed.
  • Work a reasonable schedule, which may include an assignment at any location and during any of the hours that Lawndale Christian Health Center provides services.
  • Communicate with other Care Team members (nurses, lab, patient educator, behavioral health) when patient needs services from those individuals.
  • Translate for limited English proficiency patient/clients in the absence of an interpreter, if bilingual.
  • Perform other tasks required in support of the medical providers and other staff, but which are not detailed within this job description.
  • Monitor and update work lists and queues to ensure that no patients are subjected to unnecessary delays.

Required Skills or Abilities

  • Good interpersonal skills, including an ability to work well with the variety of ages, cultures, and temperaments represented among LCHC staff and patients, treating others with kindness and professionalism in all they do.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities in accordance with the needs and mission of the clinic, multi-task, and problem solve in a fast-paced work environment as well as the flexibility to adapt to changing or stressful conditions, including unanticipated changes to working schedules or locations.
  • Commitment to demonstrating personal integrity through punctuality, honesty, an ability to follow instructions, proper attention to detail in all work matters, and a willingness learn from others.
  • Adequate written and verbal communication skills for communicating coherently and professionally with patients and co-workers.
  • Some computer skills required (Windows based, experience with Microsoft Office a plus) and knowledge of insurance preferred.
  • Typing speed of 45 wpm.
  • Conscientious of departmental and organizational policies and procedures, and able to embrace and personify the mission of the Lawndale Christian Health Center.

Required Knowledge, Education, Experience or Licensure/Registration

  • A vehicle with proof of licensure and insurance is required for this position.
  • High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • Experience in customer service, office work, or a clinical setting preferred.
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited medical assistant training program preferred.
  • Registered Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • Experience in a medical practice, laboratory, hospital or other clinical setting preferred.
  • Current CPR Certification.
